CBR600 @ 33bhp

I'm still looking for a new bike and as I can’t find any hornet 600's anywhere near me I’ve been considering a CBR600.
I know the insurance is gonna sting, but is it worth riding a CBR at 33bhp? I've got 18months left of my restriction.
Will it do any damage to the bike?

Lots of questions in such a small space!

restricted 400's run like shit, so a restricted 600 is just gonna be pointless!

i was thinking of an R6 but ive come to my senses, restricting such a powerful bike is just a seriously stupid idea!

Will stay restricted for at least a year, prob for the full 18months. My rents are lending me the money and mum is v. paranoid bout me being a temporary citizen as she calls bikers!

Anyways. If you want to know about restricted 600s, talk to Goose cos he had his R6 restricted (for about 2 weeks) so he can attest to what it felt like.

If you are honestly going to keep it restricted, I wouldn't bother. You're taking an insurance hit for something you're not getting to really use.

CB500? Mine wasn't restricted (and it's more like 53bhp) but there are a few people here with CB5s or GS500s, I'm sure someone must have one restricted and be able to tell you how it runs.

I left my GS500 restricted for a few months, and to be honest it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. It did make a difference to the power after about 8k (redline is 11k, peak power is 9250)

But before 8k rpm, it was hardly any different to how it is now

well theres no point in not getting a 600 if you want to keep the restrictors in, and getting a 400 and taking them out! its still as illegal! I have a hornet 600 and is great for me. The bike completely dies at 100 MPH with the restrictor in Embarassed

in my opinion theres no point paying insurance for a 100ish bhp bike just to ride 33bhp, so, i say get the bike you want (restrict it then destrict it if you want) and ride it full power or if you want to be legal, get a bike near 33bhp and restrict it, itll be a lot lower on insurance!

Mike is your hornet restriced then? If so is the 600 ok to ride while restricted, what affect does it have apart from the topend speed?

at 0-60MPH it knocks about a second off, probably about 5 seconds. you can notice the restriction at about 80 MPH as it take a little longer to get to 100MPH, and as i said it just dies there. Had a bit of a race with a de-restricted RS125 and i could easily pull away from it, obviosuly because of the difference in gear ratio and torgue (get to about 50MPH in first gear:) ) but as before the 100MPH restriction kicks it down Sad

Even with the restriction its great to ride Smile

I ride a Fireblade on a restricted licence. My insurance is quite legal as there's no law saying you must have a certificate. So it's nigh-on impossible to prove that you are/aren't restricted.

A lot of insurance companies would prefer to not know about restrictors, so if they don't ask, you've got nowt to worry about. But of course if they ask for a certificate, and you provide one but don't have a restricted bike, then you'll be breaching your insurance. But again, it's unlikely that they'll bother checking it.

I have a mate who was on a restricted licence and had a pretty minor accident with a car. The car owners got annoyed and demanded that the bike was tested to prove it was 33bhp, so it was taken to be tested, and it came out as under 33bhp, as he had restrictors fitted.

If the bike came out to be over 33bhp his insurance would have been void, so he would have been done for driving without insurance and driving without a licence, so he'd get a lot of points and a fine, not to mention having to pay for the damage to the other partys car.

Because of this, I'll be keeping my restrictors in!

That's only if the cager knows you're supposed to be on 33bhp. I doubt 99% of car drivers would ever know anything about that and even if they did most wouldn't think to ask for a dyno run. It's just paranoia for paranoia's sake.
