Reading all the posts about crashes due to third parties, and then those third parties denying later it was their fault, it reminded me of an idea i had years ago, when i was driving for a courier company.
How about a usb stick sized camera that you could mount discretely on the bike somewhere, that would be set to record on a constant 15 second recording loop, meaning, as the 15 seconds ends it records over the last 15th second, so it always has the last 15 seconds, if you see what i mean (this technology already exist for professional video cameras, btw). Then, upon impact or the bike being dropped, it would automatically stop recording.
That way, assuming you're in the right and the driver was at fault, you would have the 15 seconds of video leading up to the collision to prove to the courts/insurance companies that it was indeed the driver's error. (Needless to say, it would be your choice to mention the camera's existence if it was actually your own fault!)
Once fitted, forget it's there. Then should something happen, you have no need to worry about witnesses, or not having any camera on you to take pics of the aftermath - which don't always help anyway, and the driver is banged to rights, an' no mistake, guv'nor.
So, what do you reckon? Is there anything out there like this that already exists, or should i go call the Beeb right now for my spot on Dragon's Den..? ____________________ A Guide To Powerbands |

Not heard of that, yen, but yes it would be a similar principle, only this would be at full memory capacity all the time, only erasing 1 second every second. ____________________ A Guide To Powerbands |

It's becoming more and more common in the US in cars. Some insurance companies either insist on them or give you a discount if you have one.
I'd gladly have one on my bike. ____________________ My other bike's a Monster... |

So when you crash you'd be scrambling to your bike to stop it before it records over the accident |

hmm. Wire the power feed or a cut off signal into the tilt switch. So if the bike goes over then the recording stops. Simple enough in theory, just needs to be shock proof then to survive the smash. It'l then not cut out when you go over a cattle grid or a speedbump..

The Airbag has sensors that go off in an accident so no reason the same can't be used in a camera, Police can even detect the speed the car was doing at the time of the accident. Flash memory is more than enough shock resistance to survive a head on smash.
Already (as said) being used. Clicky ____________________ Andy Sez....

That's true, and i share the same concerns. For me the line is when it would inevitably go from being a positive asset to the biker, and it being his/her choice to use it or not, to compulsory fitting and having to give it up as evidence when and if required by the law.
But as for the examples you mentioned, that can happen now. What i would concentrate on is a camera that does absolutely nothing else, other than record a crash, and the events leading up to it, from the riders point of view.
All the other cameras and camera systems mentioned here still don't do exactly what i would want from it, and that is fit and forget. All require some kind of maintenance to some degree.
The AccidentCam (gotta think of something snappier if i get to stand in front of the dragons..) is only there to record a crash, and require no input from the rider from then on other than the initial installation, and taking it off after someone has caused you to crash.
It could/should be cheap, small and easy to fit somewhere discrete, and Robert''s your mother's live in lover. ____________________ A Guide To Powerbands |
