hello,

I'm a 49 year male and i want a small zipper to get around town in, i dont want the moped look or a dirt bike, and i tought a super-bike replica was a good idea, and i came across the Yamaha TZR50 in the "bike-trader" for £2,499, now my son talks about derestricting a bike, i know that makes it go faster but i would want a 50cc that goes around 50-55mph, i dont want a 125cc as i dont have much expereince with motor bikes, but your help would be very grateful and maybe some information on how to derestrict it to go around 50-55mph or most likely 60 tops would be a very big help,

thanks all

buying a 50cc bike for £2500 is daft.

for 2500 you could have most 400's and 600's.
i understand your consern about your experince but 50's are CRAP and slow.

Or go for a 125 four stroke engine.
It'll be alot cheaper, be more useful around town.
And basically easier to ride that a sports 50.

Also be about a quater of the price.

If I may ask what country you in?

I reckon 50's are only good for scoots and dirt bikes. If you want a sports bike you have to get at least a 125. A 125 isn't as hard to control as you might think. The hardest part about biking is your road sense (the size of the engine makes no difference to this).
Faster bikes arn't neccessarily more dangerous!

Have you already bought the bike?

If not, then I'd really advice you go for the 125. They have a top speed of 75 from the shop but you don't have to use it if you don't want to Smile

Assuming he's in England, he probably doesn't want to ride around with L-plates on...

yes, i am from the uk, its not nothin to show off on just a mode of transport which on a later date i can give to my youngest son when he turns 16, i have seen some information on derestriction but i'm still quite not sure what it means, is it actually possible to make a TZR50cc to go 50mph? just for those long empty roads on the way home Wink thats one reason i dont a 125cc, as i wouldnt be able to give me son anything, so really i am saving money, does any one here own any kind of 50cc sport? or maybe a "dirt bike" ?

thank's all

I think for a 50 you can't do better than something like a dt50 or xt50 if you want gears.

RS50's are quick 50cc bikes (I use the terms 'quick' and 'bikes' loosely) that will do 60ish. Mate had one for a while and he used to get his knee down everywhere on it. Very Happy If you pick up a clean one from a dealer (i.e. get a warranty) then I'm sure that would suit yourself. Only problem with that is it's a 2-stroke and will require oil and warming up each time.

Hi

This weeks MCN has a review of the new MBK 50cc race rep, which is the new Yamaha TZR50 with a different badge on the tank. Might be worth reading

Remember that if you derestrict it then it isnt a moped anymore, therefore legally you cannot reide it at 16 or on a car licence. Although you do not legally have to do CBT for a moped if you have had a car licence for a while (cannot remember the cutoff date), it is probably worthwhile doing one anyway

Can see why you want to get something that can also be used by your son (how long in the future?). If it wasnt for that then I would say go for a 125 as it is likely to be easier to ride a restricted 125 than a derestricted 50.

Top speed wise the RS50 isnt bad, but they are all going to be in the 50mph~65mph range, and with that little power your weight and how well you can hide inside the fairing will make a noticable difference.

All the best

Keith

thank you keith,

at the moment my son is 15, 16 at the end of the year, and all his mates have either a yamaha tzr50, aprilia rs50 or a motohispania rx50, i have had a quick go on the rx50 and found it quite good, it went around 50mph but i dont understand how? when i phoned up a few shops in the south (dorset area) i found out that they could ONLY go 31mph no higher at stock, one dealer told me its totally my choice if i was to de-restrict it, but how do i do that?

and "kickstart" what is the "MCN?" is it placed on this site? if i could have some information on how to make a bike go 50-65mph and exhaust info that would be great

again many thanks for your help

there are usualy some physical restrictors put in place by the manufactuer. my old scoot had a pipe coming off the exhaust which lead nowhere. i had to cut this pipe off and weld over it. the second restrictor was a plate in the variotor part of the bike which stoped the bike reaching its maximum gear ratio, this was easy to remove.

however im not sure of the exact restrictors inplace on the rx50 but i would expect them to be similar

In most cases, bikes are restricted with washers welded in the exhausts to reduce gasflow. They could also have a carb plate over the carb (easily unbolted) that restricts fuel flow. It's usually quite easy to find the restrictions - the only things that arent easy are if the bikes are restricted electronically. Then you are screwed.

if its brand new i would leave it restricted until its ran in. u could de restrict it stright away but u have to trust yourself not to go over the recomended rpm until the bike has been ran in. contact the dealer you are to buy the bike from. if there nice they may de restrict if for free or a small charge. u could do it yourself but you will need some instructions off the internet.

Another 50cc bike you could get is the Derbi Senda. Great little bike. Doesn't need warming up (it's a kick start) and gets to 60 faster than most other 50's. And it's a dirt bike.

Jerald - read this

It explains how NSR125's are restricted. I'd imagine the 50's will be restricted in similar ways.

hmm, yeah it does seem a bit confusing, so i might go with the phoning up the dealer, but that would mean i wouldnt beable to ride that fast till i wear it in, any idea how many miles that would have to be?

Hmm, that's a bugger actually, I remember how I was "restricted" to about 43mph when adhering to the running-in procedures, and that was supposed to be for 500 miles...I can't imagine what speed it would be for a machine that is already restricted to 30mph...best find an empty car park Razz
