Im not too knowledgeable about maritime laws, but whats to stop the crews of these ships carrying heavy weaponry specifically to defend against pirates?.

Probably to do with where they are registered as if their home country doesn't allow weapons it is unlikely their vessels which are subject to such laws allow them.

In international waters you are allowed to carry whatever commercially available weaponry you like, or so it was the last time I checked.

When you dock you are supposed to notify the harbour-master. Depending on the country the weapons may or may not be taken into secure storage until you leave.

So it would seem logical that if you are sailing a boat full of valuable military hardware past a known piracy hotspot such as Somalia you would be armed to the fucking teeth?

I would be a good captain me Razz

Hi

Depends how much you want to fight for the goods.

Small crew, lightly armed and not chosen for the job due to their combat experience would just mean larger and more violent hijackings. Few dead hijackers, but plenty more who would take the risk for the rich rewards and rather dead crews.

Only way to do it would be to have a large number of well trained armed guards (probably several times the size of the crews) which is almost certainly not economically viable for the shipping lines.

Although maybe they would be well away running the odd honey pot operation.

All the best

I would have thought that is one word you would get correct every time!

3 typos in 5 letters - that HAS to be a record!

Senility setting in. I forget my own name sometimes, let alone how to spell it.

Although in this case my excuse is that my right hand was one key to the right when typing my name.

All the best

Having been drinking with a nutter matelot last night who was on a 9 hour stop over in HK he said its bloody dangerous out there , when they pass the dangerous hot spots they lock down their ships as much as possible and watch cameras trained on boarding points and also keep watching the naval radar so they can call a military frigate for backup.........

I read British warships were told not to arrest any pirates in case they demand assylum ,Unlike the French warships who swiftly deal with pirates immediately Very Happy

I,ve got a uncle who works as a engineer on a shell tanker, in the past they,ve had armed guards on board during both gulf wars and back in the late 60, early 70,s when they were doing runs to Vietnam.

What you really need to a high velocity cannon firing anything bigger than 20/30mm or even a old browning .50 as the biggest bit of kit the rag heads are going to have on there small boats are RPG,s and they have a much shorter range than a large caliber round .

My ex Police college lecturer insisted that the act of piracy in Her Majestys' waters is still punishable by capitol punishment.

Think he may have been smoking dope, but an interesting thought. Suppose it'd put me off hi-jacking a piece of shit fishing boat coming out of Rhyl. Wink

Can't think of any valuable in our waters tbh!

I think they should make a reality T.V. show you have to phone in to nominate the the Special Forces that gets to raid the boat and then you can have wagers on how many pirates die/ hostages live.

I would vote SAS and all/none

Or the spetznatz (SP) all/all.

or the US SEALS/Delta Force all/all/boat sunk.
