So should i get a 2 stroke motocross or a 4 stroke

Do you have a full license? A 4 stroke would be more reliable, but less fun, and probably heavier. What's wrong with running in a 2 stroke properly?

If the moors are a public byway, you will need a driving licence to be able to use them and the bike will need to be fully road legal.

You will need to find private ground (with permission or off road track) if you don't have a licence.

Yes, it is still technically a road (just an unsurfaced one) so you will need a driving licence, insurance & mot and the bike to be road legal.

The reason why Minimotos caused such a problem, there was no real places apart from on a track to use them.

As mentioned, unless you have a monster garden to ride in, without a licence, tax and insurance you're going to be stuffed.

I'd get a 2t if it were me. If you are going to ruin the landscape and shatter the peace and quiet then why not do it in smoky style.

Hi

As above with the legal situation.

And if you want a competition bike then expect the maintenance requirements to be far higher than for the NSR. And the 4 strokes will almost certainly need more maintenance than the equivalent 2 strokes.

Eh? Do you know about motocross bikes Confused. 4 strokes need more maitenance and so suffer abuse worse if not run properly generally. They are heavier and I'd say less fun, though Smile.

If you're riding accross Dartmoore, from what I've seen riding on the roads around there, I'd expect you to get reported to the police.
You will be riding illegally and may well be scaring livestock, horse riders etc.

If the police catch you, I wouldn't be surprised if they still manage to do you for riding without a licence and give you even more points.

To my mind, this is a bad plan.

If you want to ride bikes off road, find a 'practice track' or a friendly farmer.

You would need to do a more than just fit road legal tyres to the bike to make it legal - a lot of enduro tyres are road legal anyway.

As it seems you want a bike to abuse and can't be bothered with maitenance, I would stay away from motocross and enduro bikes. Maybe have a look at a trail bike of some kind.

Nope, not a clue above stuff to the level of DRZs etc, I just presumed he didn't want a full blown competition bike if he wants to ride it on the road after his ban expires (if he gets one).

That said, isn't the maintenance schedule of even an XR250 incredibly high?

Motocross bikes are competition bikes. Plenty of people do ride them on the road, though it's not ideal.

The listed schedule for an XR250 is pretty nasty, but I believe that's for competition use.

How do you mean? It is an off road bike if that is what you mean, and usually they can be road registered. However, you can't legally go off roading in a national park UNLESS its on a byway, and then you need a license, tax, insurance, MOT, and the bike needs to be correctly registered.

So my advice is to forget it.

If it's not a country park, then it's probably private land, so you can expect a farmer with a shotgun.
Sadly the UK is not like some less densely populated countries where there's loads of places you can just ride you want.
Currently there is a significant clamp-down on illegal riding, which you would be doing unless you're going to a designated paid-for 'practice track' or similar

You really do not listen do you?

There is nowhere you can legally ride an unlicensed bike off road unless it's private land and you have the owner's permission. NOWHERE, OK!

If you manage to keep your license then there are some byways- i.e. unsurfaced roads- that you can ride on, with a road legal bike (tax/ MOT/ insurance.

Basically, unless you make friends with a farmer or summit, forget it.
