I thought it was a criminal offence to deny the holocaust or preach that it didn't happen? Or is that in just some countries? Isn't there some right wing guy who is always getting it in the neck for writing a book on the subject?

Yes it is a disgrace. However, when someone makes such a comment, I'm always intrigued as to which party they vote for at election time.

They don't teach anything important in history anyway, especially not in the compulsory years. I learned absolutely nothing about recent history (50 years) when I was in school.

Barely a mention of WW2 and nothing after that. No word of vietnam, JFK, Cold War, Falklands, Gulf war etc. Nothing about any of our big list of rights or how they've been stripped away. I'm aware that if you took it up for GCSE they would brush over some more recent events but not very well.

My brief history timeline. ish.

A long long time ago people lived in sand in Egypt. Stupid people that worshipped the sun and had a Phaoroh who kept thousands of slaves and forced them to build some pyramids.

Fast forward a little, people got swords and arrows and cut the shit out of each other all over the world in muddy fields.

Some dick found amerika and stole it.

And now we're free. Woohoo.

On one of my exams there was a "Current Affairs" section which was just a load of trivial media bollocks. Rolling Eyes

It's all dumbed down.

If you just look at the facts in that article it's not that bad really. They found one school that wasn't teaching the Holocaust (presumably across a wide sample; shitty journalism means they don't say) and as of next year it's going to be compulsory anyway.

Yes it's a mistake not to teach it but the article would suggest that a tiny minority of places are making that mistake and that it will be resolved very soon anyway.[/i]

And some Christians were objecting to the covering of the Arab-Israeli conflict and the foundation of the state of Israel.

OP would make a great Daily Mail reporter: a couple of teachers aren't teaching the holocaust and he comes up with a title "Holocaust no longer to be taught in UK schools". Rolling Eyes

Yes, April 2007. Some people really should stop living in the past.

I think thats just in Germany and Austria, the main problem is that people who question the numbers of people who died in the holocaust are accused of being holocaust deniers which is bollocks since after the war numbers have gradely increased 500,000, 1 million, 2 million, 4 million and l think its stated at around 6 million jews died now and with everything in history people have the right to question and debate it.

It is illegal in this country to deny the holocaust.

I agree that its a natural debate, the problem is that the Nazis destroyed all records relating to the holocaust so numbers are speculative based on eyewitness and technical calculations.

However having spent many days in Aushwitz over the years there is no doubt at all that it did happen regardless of the actual numbers.

Nope its technically not illegal over here but someone could be prosecuted for something like racial hatred etc.

Quote:
holocaust denial is explicitly or implicitly illegal in 13 countries: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Israel, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Poland, Portugal, Romania, and Switzerland. Slovakia made Holocaust denial a crime in late 2001 but repealed the legislation in May 2005. Spain decriminalized Holocaust denial in October 2007. Italy rejected a draft Holocaust denial law proposing a prison sentence of up to four years in 2007, the Netherlands rejected a draft law proposing a maximum sentence of one year in 2006 and before this the United Kingdom twice rejected a Holocaust denial law. Denmark and Sweden also have rejected Holocaust denial legislation.

actually that stuff is quite relevant today.
Guy fawkes was a bit of an osama bin laden.

All the stuff we debate on this forum about 9/11 and if it was actually an inside job or a set up, people have thought the same about guy fawkes.

Some people say it was a plot instigated by the government to discredit catholics and to allow a massive clamp down on them and suspension of their rights.

They also used torture for questioning like the american do with their suspects.

Guy fawkes had attempted a suicide bombing which is like the stuff going on today.

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that this story was just a complete fabrication, and that it's still on the curriculum with no plans to remove it.

It was fabricated to make people like BCF members say "OH MY GOD IT'S POLITICAL CORRECTNESS GONE MAD".

There was an email circulating along these lines that was proven to be totally false. I didn't learn about the Holocaust at GCSE, but did at A level - no big deal, surely?

If you didnt take A level it would

Everyone should know about the holocaust

because despite this horrible genocide the world still turns a blind eye to similair events today

Most of whom already know about the holocaust, meaning it doesn't have much of an impact?

People are all about self-interest; show them a tragedy and they couldn't give a monkey's unless taking action benefits them in some way. They'll tut and make sympathetic noises, then get back to their nice secure Western lifestyle - OMFGZ did you see how expensive petrol is these days?!?!!
