Now I have RAC cover I'm thinking of doing away with the tyre levers and inner tubes that I keep with my tools, as someone pointed out that fixing a puncture by the side of the road will be challenging on the EL anyway (no center stand, and the back tyre is massive).

Has anyone had any experience of that tyre weld stuff? Thinking of investing in a can as a 'get-home' measure. I'm getting rid of my luggage rack and huge toolbag and just mounting a tool tube somewhere containing the essentials, you see.

Used it a fair few times, used to carry a can in the topbox of all the work bikes. Did what it said on the tin, riding in excess of 30-40mph isn't clever unless you seriously like white knuckle rides though. Some tyre shops can get stroppy if you take a wheel in after using it, be warned.

I've used it on a tubeless tyre before. You can't go over 40mph on it though, as I found out. Once I went over about 40, it melted creating a puncture again. But as a get you home measure its good.

I'm not sure how well it will work on tubed tyres though, because I imagine that the foam stuff would simply flow out of the puncture in the tube and then seep out of the tyre at the rim.

Used it on my tubed KTM - gave enough pressure to continue greenlaning, then get to a petrol station and pump it up.
Got me home doing, often doing 80mph and then continued riding it for a bit after no problems.

Hmm, are ridein one of the tyre places that hate that stuff?

What's the reason for tyre places hating it is it just cause it makes a green goooey mess over their tyre machine?

Aye, slime is really loathed. Tyre weld used to look like expanded polystyrene insulation material, break the bead on the tyre and there would be a gout of white dust. That may have changed by now.

Ive got it in my rear tyre, Been in there about 1k miles now, no problem at all, done a few motorway runs too, but the puncture was tiny, It was a thin thorn in the side of a grove. So its not in contact with the road

i've stuck the stuff the halfords sells in the rear tyre of both my GSXR750ws and my slabby 711 when they've both had slow punctures, seen 160 (indicated) on the GSXR with it in there without any problem, the slabby has kissed 140 once or twice but not sure if it was with the goo in the tyre...

used one of those in an old GL1100 i had when i copped a puncture coming back from Dover, cruised at 80 -85 without trouble, never took the tyre off till it was worn out and by then i'll guarantee it had been well past 100mph ....

do i have confidence in that stuff, so far yes

I've used it twice now, first time it sealed the tyre fine, even over night it stayed at the same pressure.

the second time i used it, it wouldnt seal the puncture and i ended up with the foam stuff all over my hugger and undertail which is almost impossible to wipe clean once dry.

I tend to keep a can with me when out and about and have had to use it once or twice when the ZZR's rear tire turned into a nail magnet ofer a few weeks. Did 20+ miles at 60+mph with no issues and once the stuff is set in there then it's pretty solid. All the tire places I've been to have had no issues with stripping, cleaning and plugging the rubber.

Must get a can for the car as well thinking about it as my spare is a pain to get to and the jack can only be removed from the boot with pliers...

K.

a mate used a can of tyre weld to sort out a slow punture on the MT-03. It would loose pressure over a few days with no obvious leak. After the tyre weld he had no issues at all...

'tis good stuff (tm)

Well, I took the plunge and bought a big can of Holt's - it's probably the best bet, I have RAC cover but I don't want to call them out for a flat tyre if I can help it, but at the same time there's no point carring tyre levers and spare inner tubes because doing that by the side of the road would be near enough impossible anyway!

At the end of the day, if it works enough to get me to my destination then I can always call the RAC to take me home. And if it doesn't, well, at least I tried!

Why buy "get you home stuff" spend £26 on ULTRASEAL, put it in your tyre prevents you getting punctures, when change tyre what's left on tyre wall will wash out with water.(no grief from tyre fitters)

Have used it for 4 years with my Thunderace, (41,500 miles) then when changed to the 05 R1 have used it in that since may 06, even did a track day at mallory 07 no probs.

Give it a try, could save you a recover charge & a new tyre !!
