PostPosted: 13:41 - 04 Oct 2008    Post subject: Resriction Question Urgent! Reply with quote

Hello

i've agreed to buy a 2006 honda hornet 600. the problem is that it needs to be restricted to 33bhp, only i can't move it myself to a dealer, or can i?
From many hours of research i thought restrictor kits should be around £150 for the kit and around £100 for the fitting. only now the dealer is saying kit £200 and the fitting £150 is this about right?

another question is about the money what is the best way to transfer the money to the seller. e.g cash, bank cheque or over the internet?

please help.

How are you buying the bike....ebay? Autotrader? local?

No way would I buy a bike without seeing it or riding it ( or getting a trusted friend to do so) If you have bought the bike from Ebay then I would suggest a SMALL deposit through Paypal ( that way you are protected from fraud) then cash on collection/delivery AFTER a thorough looking over by someone who knows what to look for, if not EXACTLY as the description then you can legally walk away and try and get your deposit back....if seller doesn't require a deposit then just turn up as above....you can always walk away if the description doesn't match ( I.E. described as excellant, but not excellant when seen) hope that helps. If not Ebay then as above get someone who knows bikes to check it for you.

Sorry forgot original question Rolling Eyes Exclamation you will not be able to ride an unrestricted bike unless you have a full unrestricted licence.
could you borrow a trailer, or how are you getting the bike home? If being delivered why not have it delivered straight to the bike shop, or even could the seller take it to a local dealer for you to pick up? As for cost, phone around some other dealers and ask them for a quote.

I had the same problem so I asked a local dealer to pick it up from the seller, fit the restrictor and then deliver it to me. All in this was £250 but I had no option, having bought privately.

I think the price you've been quoted is very high. A fitted kit should be around the £200 mark. I reckon any restrictor kit can be fitted in around an hour - mine involved removing the carbs and rebalancing and it didn't take long. Experienced mechanics can have these things done in no time.

I'd question them over the price or get another quote, including the pick-up/drop-off.

Dude, fuck the dealers. The Restriction is bollocks. (I have/had a Hornet 600).

Go to a dyno place instead and get a thottle stop made. HurricaneHollis of the forum had it done to his ER6. Cheaper and has the same result. Thumbs Up

The "certificate" they give you is just shit on paper. Don't pay over 200. I did and regretted it.

And tbh, just ride the bike to the place on the day. Or see if a friend or someone can hire a van or something?

Also, time taken to put restrictors in takes no time at all. BArely any experience is needed. I was able to take mine out within half an hour.

Carbs rebalanced? Don't need doing. They probably just did it on top but doesn't need be doing. All they did for me was take the tank off, air box off, put the washers in, and put everything back together.

If a highly inexperienced person (me) can do all that in 30 mins I'm pretty sure a highly experienced person will take less time.

The FI kit is just a rip off. Thumbs Down

What molly said.

Do a search on restriction on this forum to find out how much of a con it is. There is nothing in the law that says you need a certificate, just that the bike must put out 33bhp or less. It doens't even state a model, so you could take 3 plug leads off and that would be legal. Although I imagine a 1 cylinder hornet would be super guttless. Laughing

Gonna be an old bore here........dunno about the law stating whether or not a certificate is needed, but IF the worst happened, I am pretty sure that an insurance company became involved, they would want to see proof that the bike was restricted, and their engineer would find out in no time that the bike was being ridden other than "in accordance with the licence", and would refuse to pay out, which could leave you with a rather expensive bill, especially if the fault was yours! If you do decide to ride it to the dealer, then do not give the Police ANY excuse to stop you.

Dont buy an FI kit search around on ebay join the honda owners club even the hornet owners club if there is one theres bound to be someone with 1 i got mine of Gixerjunkies for 50 squids got it fitted for 50 squids too so saved myself some pennies there

How far has the bike got to go to get restricted if its less than 10 miles fuck it ride it there yourself its not worth spending £100 on hiring a van for an hour just make sure you have insurance docs and license with you incase of a pull Thumbs Up

But what does that bit of paper prove ???? Nothing.
If a Ins co is worried that its been riden unrestricted, they will take it to bits to check, not rely on a bit of paper that anyone could have printed.
Same as if you are stopped by the police, they will take the bike and test it, even if you have the paper on you.....

Exactly my point ( though I didn't say it DOH! ) If you need it restricting, then the Insurance company will check, I have heard of someone who had his car stolen, when recovered the ins would not pay because he had aftermarket alloys, and hadn't declared it as a modification, they will always look for a reason not to settle, as for the police taking it, I do not think they can without reason, the certificate, unless it is obviously a fake, would be "proof" that it is restricted.

There is NO offical certificate..... Well unless you believe what F1 will tell you......

A good enough reason for a pull is.......

Anything that is breaking the law. And with the info below that could in their eyes be L plates on any large CC bike.

The biggest problem is the lack of actual knowledge of the rule's by the police.
But i guess they cannot know ever law/rule going.

From memory...... only a specially trained police vehicle examiner, can touch any part of your bike at the roadside. wondering whether or not you have a restrictor fitted, is not sufficient reason to put an innocent (until proven guilty) motorist through the hassle of an arrest ( to enable them to examine the evidence), Just to be landed with an unlawful arrest complaint. If you are obviously speeding to an extreme excess, then possibly(?), If you are involved in a serious accident, then they can examine your bike, as can the insurer.

Silly question have you tried a Honda dealership? I know Triumph are very reasonable and charged me £60 inc fitting for my S4.

Don't get ripped off mate. I paid £10 for a set of washers and fitted them myself. Job done! As mentioned above, go to a forum specific to your bike and post a wanted thread for a restrictor kit.
