FWIW.

just wanted to pass on a warning about a parcel scam currently doing the
rounds.

'delivery' company leaves a card with your post saying they have a
parcel for you to pick up and containing a number for you to call to
arrange pick up or redelivery. As soon as you ring the number you are
charged £15! Obviously there is no parcel. The number on the card is
09066611911. Don't ring this number!

Thumbs Up

Code:
We have the following information about this number.

    * This is a Parcel Delivery Service. ICSTIS removed access to this number in December 2005. Recipients received cards in the post suggesting a parcel was unable to be delivered and the premium rate number should be called. This service costs £1.50 per minute (Plus any phone network surcharges - please check with your phone company for full details).
    * This service has been adjudicated upon.

We also have contact details for the company that provides this service. If you have any queries about it, please get in touch with them to find out more.

[b]IBAS Summary: In essence it's a 'dead' scam since December 2005[/b] - but only on that specific telephone number. It does not mean that another scam using exactly the same method but a different phone number will not emerge for Christmas 2007. So be aware - our advice, as always is not to just pick up the phone - always check telephone numbers, particularly if they are obviously premium rate phone lines. These scams rely on curiosity and of course lack of knowledge. So if you want to help those on your email address book send them this page or link to our website.

Debt collectors and debt collection agencies also use similar 'we have your parcel' routines to obtain direct contact with those they are 'chasing' for payment.

There are many fraudsters conning unsuspecting people and taking their money. Scam artists are growing in numbers every day using scams both old and new or variations of both to trick you into giving them your money.

The Internet ‘breeds’ such scams and cons as it offers a huge number of people who may be vulnerable, you should be extremely cautious of anyone using a selling ‘pitch’ which just seems too good to be true - it usually is. Also, never agree to release any information or pay any money to any company, or individual, unless they can be verified as legitimate.

Ancient....

Just to poke the hornets nest a tad further , the only reason these scams get away with such things is that the government failed to legislate on a maximum per minute call , thing and thus allowed people to be caught in this IIRC.

Ummmn, there is a maximum allowed! It's £1.50/minute.

There is no minimum of £15 call, I think it tried to keep you on the phone for 9 minutes or something.

The company pulling the scam has had it's numbers pulled now by ICSTIS.

Have a look at https://www.snopes.com/fraud/telephone/pds.asp for more info.

I rather guessed that number would be dead already, with new one/s provided. It was just a heads-up on the off-chance, I'd never heard of it before.

Should have told your best mate Siggi about it, he would have told you it was a scam. Thumbs Up Wink https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=95235

if anyone thinks a parcel company would use a premium rate number then they aren't going to have the brains to understand advice.

same with those who keep falling for bank/password scams. Rolling Eyes

As they say... a fool and there money are easily parted Wink
