with no clutch .
was having a lovely ride today and when i got to a place called glossop(near manchester) i went for the clutch to stop at some lights and the cable snapped
i sat at the side of the road wondering what to do and realised i had left my phone at home and then remembered i had also left my bank card aswell which left me pennyless and stranded as i had no money on me whatsoever and also wasn't sure if the fuel i had left would get me home.
anyhow, i decided to give it a go at riding without the clutch, which to say the least was very tricky, but eventually got the jist of it. when i did have to stop i set about finding neutral about 300 yards before junctions, lights and whatever else meant stopping, when it was time to go again i got of and ran next to the bike, swung a leg over like a stuntman and slammed down on the gear lever as jogging pace is 1st gear at idle.
all was going well until someone decided to have an accident on the main road back to chesterfield which meant detour time ,
headed of to find a way round and ended up on a single track road in the middle of nowhere and the tit infront of me decided he didn't want to go that way and slowed to a stop right halfway up a great big fuckin hill and unfortunately did not have sufficient time to find
neutral*stall*,
so now here i am halfway up a giant hill with the tit infront pointed the wrong way and a growing cue of cars building up behind me so i had no choice but to try and push it up the hill . puffing and panting i pushed the bike up in 5 metre bursts feeling like i was about to die and did anyone get out to help?... did they fuck. took me about 15 mins to push the 100m or so up the hill till i got to flatish ground all the while the cars just pootled up behind me(tossers). and what a relief, got it going again and of i went soon to realise i was now lost and cruising round little poxy villages without a clue where i was and petol running low.
after about 20 mins of franticly looking at meaningless road signs i came across a matlock, derby A6 woohoo and from the on it was just a case of extreme forward planning and sixth sense observations. now im home and planning an alternative route to work in the morning that involves minimal junctions and lights as new cable wont arrive till tuesday

Bodge it? , if you have some pliers or better mole grips , just use it to grip the end of the cable since it will have snapped at one of the nipples (reverse the cable if it snapped at the clutch end) and lots of tape cable ties to hole the pliers together (best wrap the frayed cable round the plier outer body too a few times).
Then you in effect have a clutch which you can activate with your leg.
If the cable has snapped at both ends like mine once did you can jubliee clip a spanner onto the clutch nub thing and use your right foot effectively as a foot clutch.
I did this when I was stuck in Liverpool and it snapped , got home ok.. ____________________ Spain 2008France 2007Big one 2009 We all die. The goal isn't to live forever, the goal is to create something that will. In the end, your life will flash before your eyes. Make sure it is worth watching. |

some good ideas there think i will try the spanner one as the cable has frayed off at the handlebar end and there wont be enough for the mole grips to get a decent grab if i turned it round.

whilst at work today... i made this
pretty obvious how it works there is also a jubilee clip you cant see behind the mole grips, i know its a little dangerous but works suprisingly well for what it is. ____________________ 04 NSR 125(sold) ---- 03 CBR 600rr(sold) ----90 pan euro ST1100 ' ' ----02 CG 125

I managed to use this as a throttle once, it was a joint effort but Gman had the main idea:
https://www.bikechatforums.com/files/dsc00449_190.jpg
Very basic. Take a changable head screwdriver found in many toolkits
shove remaining cable into shaft and jam down with screwdriver bit. Then yank to go.... Don't fall off the back of the bike!
Sure the same principle could be applied to a clutch cable. ____________________ Current Bikes - Kawasaki ZX-6R (636) | BMW G650GS |

and downshifting which is a bit harder, finding neutral is even worse ____________________ 04 NSR 125(sold) ---- 03 CBR 600rr(sold) ----90 pan euro ST1100 ' ' ----02 CG 125
