Hi. I am considering riding up to London on Friday, and have been trying to understand the deal with permits and charges. Not sure I'm on track here, but I believe I need to register or phone the council to make a one-off £1.50 payment for the day. Correct?

Is there a slightly better chance than a snowball's in hell that I would be able to find a space in Westminster, near Charing Cross/Trafalgar Square?

I hope it is cheaper than the £26 return train fare I would have to pay, otherwise. I want to travel onwards from there, so taking the bike seems like a good idea, if the money/hassle pans out OK.

What do you reckon, please?

I have a 11h30 appointment on Friday, so hope to get there by 11h00, and leave by 13h00 latest.

I can find you a parking spot on Long Acre for a couple of hours which is right where you want to be BUT it's a building site and you will have to accept responsibility if your bike gets dirty or damaged. Off the record it will be quite safe, but as above it's your call.

You'd be lucky to find a space, but there are lots around in that area if you don' mind walking...

In regards to paying, I'm guessing it's the same as the car bays - there will be a board by the parking with a telephone number and a location number.

Ring the number, set up an account (keep your debit card handy, and try and get hold of customer services, as it's quicker) they'll ask for your location number and charge your card...and your done.

Come to think of it, there is a place to park on Long Acre right now because they have just laid a new road and path but haven't yet put the signs up indicating times of restriction. The place to look is right opposite Mercer Street. They have 'Loading only' painted on the road but as I said - no signs up just yet so people have been parking free for a fortnight now.

Check the map on the NCP site, you have to pay (in most central london ones) but at least there's no bother finding a space.
