Quote:
Show me what checks you would make on the steering movement before using the machine.

Embarassed

Move the handle bars from left to right, making sure that it travels freely and smoothly both ways, with no grinding, clicking or any other "noises", and with no control cables, being stretched, trapped or snagged between moving and fixed parts

You will get a minor now if you sit on the bike.

Embarassed glad I checked now. So I've jumped off the bike and am standing by it. Should I do it with or without the side stand?

centre stand
easier to move the bars

if you need to do anything other than what they have asked for then ask before you do

EG
Question
How would you test the horn is working?
Answer
I would press this button (point to horn button) but it wont work without the ignition on, is it okay to switch on the ignition to demonstrate

they will either say "sure, go ahead" or "that wont be neccessary thanx"

At the start they may say words along the lines of "if you need to switch the ignition on to demonstrate then go ahead"

if they say that talk through it as you do it

EG
Question
How would you check all lights are working on the bike

Answer
I would switch the ignition on to power the lights (key in, ignition on), check the front light for dipped beam (hand in front of light) than for main beam (with hand in front of the light switch main beam on) you are looking for a stronger and slightly higher light
same for rear light, including BOTH brakes

if you stand to the side of your bike you can reach all controls from the one side, operating the rear brake by leaning over and pressing it with one hand, using the other to check it comes on

if you talk through it while doing it they can stop you and say that wont be neccessary if you start to check too much Smile
keeps them involved as well and reinforces you know what to do Smile

oh yeah:
for things that you can throw figures in for like tyres, say the usual 1mm of tread over 3/4 of the tyre, dont try to remember pressures, just say "i would check both tyres for signs of cracking / buldging / foreign objects, then using a tyre guage i would check there is at least 1mm of tread over 3/4 the width of the tyre. Also using a pressure gauge i would check the tyre pressures, referring to the manufacturers recommended pressures for the correct pressures"

Keep it simple, that answer works for 100% of bikes, no matter what tyres it has on

I didn't, it was on the side stand, I already had my helmet on and he asked me to demonstrate how i'd check the steering, so I jumped on.

I asked the examiner to stand behind the bike while I operated the brakes and tell me if they came on!
