When filling out application forms, and they ask 'do you have a driving licence'... do you put yes if you /only/ have a bike licence?

Obviously the two sides of the coin are, putting in -

Yes - They think you can drive company cars/vans

No - They think you don't have transport and will be late

So... what do you guys put?

(don't click the poll if you have both or just a CBT)

I'd go for the no, since you don't have a car licence. But I woud be writing on the form that I have a bike licence.

Problem solved. Thumbs Up

depends on the job actually

In that my bosses are kind of pleased I ride a motorbike , since they only have to pay me 25p per mile for when I go out on audit,

Also because I park for free in most places I don't claim expenses for parking either....

Kind of cramped though , more than once I've had my audit junior on the back , two paniers full of audit gear miles and miles on the motorway..

I'd probably say I have my own transport......

As a solicitor trainee acquaintance of mine can't get a job as she can't drive and thus cannot go out to clients, by virtue of being able to move about I'm ranked higher than some of the established folks at my work place.

That said my work place is in trouble.... they 'accidentally' forgot to run the pay roll recently delaying our pay packets by a week, nobody believes them its more a case of our clients not paying and many DDs bouncing...

I put yes and then write beside it bike licence. cant say its misleading then.

edit: all the applications I seen actually gave the motorbike licence box.

I'm thinking more the online ones. Usually if paper etc I add motorbike. The clues on my CV too as main hobby.

but if its an online form with yes or no choice, then its a bit harder Wink

Wherever there is official ambiguity always choose the more advantageous option.

If it's online, then might as well click yes and clarify later; it's really not /that/ hard to get a car-driving licence, so if the job's good enough, you can offer to get one before you start.

Just a small word of advice. Leave any reference to hobbys off your CV. It never does any good, only potential for bad.

A CV is like a teaser, just to get you through the door, when you can then impress them with your personality.

If I received a CV from someone who stated that their main hobby was playing golf, I would bin it, but I wouldn't immediately call a biker for an interview.

Anyway, just my advice, disregard it if you want.

Aye, I see your logic mate. But what with being so obviously science based I got worried about appearing too 1-dimensional. Adding that you do a few other things (hopefully) makes me look like I won't be some hermit.

I left it blank, and they asked me yesterday in an interview. I told them I had a full bike license and I'm taking driving lessons now. They seemed impressed. Guess they were waiting to hear I haven't got a license at all. Laughing

I ticked yes before reading your OP bonny, sorry dude. Laughing Thumbs Up

Having both, I declare both. Also declare couple of hobbies for also not appearing '1-dimensional' - Love that. Mr. Green

I've wondered about this in the past and generally haven't included them; however talking to some people who are/have been managers interviewing, they've suggested that they like to see some interests; it can give them something to easily start conversation with you in other areas to gain more of an idea about you. Of course, that helps if you have something matching their interests.

I think I didn't have any down for the last job I applied for and they did ask me in the interview.
I'd try not to make a big think out of motorbikes unless they are into them too; I think I went with mountain biking and off-road motorbiking. I think in that case I did come across perhaps a bit too 'extreme' in general with other stuff; will remember to cool it down a bit more next time.

I filled in an application for the RAF under the watchful eye of a Sgt. When it came to "Do you have a full UK driving licence" I told him I only had motorcycle entitlement and he told me to tick "Yes".

Thumbs Up

Do you insure your bike for business use? (bare in mind it's illegal not to and could cause a problem if you have an accident) If so I'd imagine the 25p per mile barely covers the added cost of this plus the petrol/wear & tear.

They only ask if you have a DRIVING license, not a car license. So I would put yes. Thumbs Up

You only need business class 1 cover - which really is not that much of a pain, since it is just a technicality covered. It's not like you do multi drop driving etc, just drive to diff places each day. Think it cost me an extra tenner on my last policy.

I guess it also has to do with what sort of job you are applying for. Some (like accountancy for example) are a bit more 'stuffier' than others. For example, if I put that I enjoyed doing trackdays at the weekend, then they would probably get concerned that I may not turn up on Monday, or are just a bit of a risk taker. Not that good for what should be a fairly conservative, reliable role.

If I was applying for a job at a games studio, or some other more 'creative' industry I would tend to be a little more flamboyant with what to include. All about the audience.

In general, however, I still maintain that you lose no points for not including it, but there is the potential to lose points if you do.

I'm going to stop rambling now.
