Hello,

I have gained my CBT & Theory certificates but unfortunetly failed my practical by trying to overtake a 12-wheeler lorry on a cg125 without looking over my shoulder and caused a car to slow down but that could be just a thing that examiners say they saw to bring profit in but anyway I failed. I think I was pretty naive in thinking I could pass the practical test after just two days of training without ever even riding a bike before and driving a car for over a year I wasn't used to two wheels at all, so after the test the instructor advised me to purchase a 125cc and ride for about two months and get used to riding then re-book a test.

I'm stuck and confused about what bike to get for example I don't even know what two stroke or four stroke means... I have found a few bikes that interest me: Honda NSR125, Yamaha YZF125, Aprilla RS125, I'm 6ft tall and weigh 11 stone. I need one that is very quick at acceleration.

Can someone give me some fundamental things I need to know about bikes?

Thanks.

Try riding them all, if possible, or get someone of a similar weight to you to ride, My wifes 125, is great for her, but needs more power to take me ( I have thought about adding an aftermarket Slimfast, or 2 week Special K challenge, to get it to go faster with me on!), Make sure you are comfy with the riding position. Why don't you do a DAS course?
And WTF did your instructor not advise you you to postpone your test, if he doesn't think that you are ready?

2 stroke, and 4 stroke has to do with the stages that undergo between each cycle. Have a look on wikipedia and it will tell you.

To put simply...
A 2 stroke bike..
+ twice the power of a 4stroke of the same cc
+ more responsive
+ many people like the noise over a 4stroke
- poor emissions
- poor fuel efficiency
- burns oil
- requires a rebuild every few thousands of miles
- high maintainance

4 stroke
+ fuel efficient
+ less maintannce, more reliable
+ better emissions
+ more popular these days
- not as much power

I was thinking of buying a NSR125 but heard its hard to maintain also insurance will be more.
I ended up with a CBR125 love it, although its not as quick as NSR, but then i'm still learning the roads.

Test ride them as said above see which 1 feels good.

it all comes down to what you personally prefer, id say the forums kind of split down the middle on the 4t vs 2t debate which is way its been done to death and you'll get a thousand and one answers all varying. me personally i like sports bikes, looks mean a lot, (i know im sallow but its so perdy) im a little bit of a speed freak, (safety nazi's im sorry).so basically id go with the nsr, but i know people like kal for example like the cg (with good reason), and i guess they have a different reason for why they would choose the 4t (you would right kal?). so it all comes down to what you prefer weighed up against the side effects of owning it, and weaver you can deal with them, good luck with the choice Wink
