Yep, I've had 3, 1 x UK 16v, 1 x JDM 16v (Si) and 1 x JDM 1.5.

Big thing to look out for is rust. Rear arches are the first to go along with the sunroof if it has one (i.e a UK model).

After that, look out for suspension noises, they have a lot of rubber bushes up front which break up resulting in knocking. It isn't uncommon for the front springs to snap either, so check those to.
At the back, have a look at the trailiing arm bush, the split and will fail an MOT. Again, nothing scary, bushes are about ~£20 each and can be fitted at home, just need to get the wheel alignment checked afterwards.

Brakes are the next troubled area, not many problems up front other than the standard items not quite being up to the job (they over heat quite quickly when driven hard), its the rears which give the headaches. Nothing serious, they just bind up after a while. Some free off with a good clean, others need rebuilding/replacing. Not difficult or expensive (£40 max for a refurbed caliper).

Not much engine wise, just look for the usual smoke on startup and while engine-braking. Best thing is to try and get one with a decent amount of history. Don't be to concearned if its got 100k+ miles.

Gearboxes can have issues, worn syncros and tired bearings being the usual suspects, they can be rebuilt and the parts are still avaliable AFAIK. Watch out for them popping out of gear or being 'crunchy'. Clutches are normally ok, if it is worn its not a big job to change (£90 for a standard kit, after-market ones arn't much more either).
If there is a lot of juddering when pulling away, this probably won't be the clutch. The front engine mount breaks up after a while and cause excess engine movement. The mount is about £15 - £20 for a standard one and is only a 3 bolt job.

So, if the body is good and you arn't scared of replacing a few aged parts when they let go, go for it! If you are expecting years of trouble free motoring, I wouldn't be so sure, they are all nearly 20 years so will have a few problems unless you find one with 100% service history.

My neighbour had one of those when I was a kid, little silver thing, looked amazing and sounded mental too. Always wanted one...

Another one here who has a desire to own one.

So, so difficult to find a genuinely good one these days though. So many have either fallen into the hands of oiks who've covered them in nasty modifications, or in the hands of people who've not really looked after them, so they're covered in rust, the seats are tatty as hell and wouldn't be surprised if the engine blows up.

Unless it's a good one, run a mile.

I'd love one too, saw one in some supermarket car park a while ago, lusted over it for a few minutes, Cool I'd have one that was half good, not bothered about perfect. Laughing

A mate of mine had one, made 187bhp and pissed all over the new type rs, clio cups etc.

They weigh nothing and rev like a bike, make sure you get the one with the b16 engine.

Like all modern cars, milage is the least of your worries. Look for a decent amount of history. That will tell you that the car has been looked after. A well serviced engine will last many times longer than a poorley serviced example, regardless of how many miles are on the clock.

As chrisw says above, buy on condition and service history rather than mileage. There's no reason why a well serviced 150k+ engine wouldn't be sweet as a nut, and on the same basis, a badly treated engine with less than half that could be a rebuild waiting to happen.

From what I've heard, the Honda engines have the potential to go on for ever as long as they've been well serviced.

All Honda engines of that generation are bullet proof, mileage is the least of your worries.

I'd look for rot/rust and a crunchy box. Even then, a new box isn't that much.
