I set one of these off the other day, and I thought "well it can't do anything as my number plate's on the back"...

Then the next day, I was travelling on the same road and just prior to the camera I set off the day before, on my side of the road, I was flashed twice, even though I was doing WELL under the speed limit.

Is that the system catching up with me for the day before's mistake, or just sheer coincidence?

The camera was out for revenge. It told all it's speed camera mates and they'll all be looking out for you.

Seriously though, I've been flashed before in the car doing well under the limit. Not sure if it's just a random flash to check it's still working, or something had randomly triggered it (no other cars about at the time). Never heard anything more about it anyway.

I wouldn't worry as they use the lines on the road to judge your speed and will be able to tell you were under the limit.

I had this in my car a month ago, must have been someone on the other side of the road going too quickly and triggering it, scariest 2 weeks of my life, nothing came through though.

Can we be fined for going through a camera that was designed for the other side of the road and setting it off or are we safe? (no number plate obviously but you hear of people getting caught fairly often by clothing/helmets/face(

Thing is if you were wearing the same gear, same bike and at the same scamera and they notice the two pictures I wonder if they would do anything? Confused

From what I've heard, apparently you can't be done going through a Gatso that's on the other side of the road, and the lines on the other side are mainly to catch anyone who may try to speed past on the wrong side of the road. However, this has just been from talking to random people, so I wouldn't accept it to be true based on that. Give it a try though and let us know how you get on Wink

I doubt that would stand up, as you could argue that someone else could have the exact same gear and bike as you (unlikely but still plausible).

Don't think so, as the camera measures the distance travelled within a set period (ie the 2 flashes), then uses that mathematics favourite of Speed = Distance / Time to calculate the speed.

I think the camera just senses that you are speeding, rather than working out your speed before it flashes you. Then once the piccy has got back to the office or where ever it goes, the computer works out your speed (simple distance/time thingy me bob between 2 points. IE - the lines on the road)

I was once flashed by a camera on the other side of the road, with my mate on the back. I was speeding (i have a speed camera on my private drive you see) and my and my mate thought it would be funny to give it the bird Laughing ...just our luck it flashed Very Happy

Was expecting to go into work the next day and someone show me the local paper with a pic in it Laughing Camera was the one on huddersfield road near the athletics field/bus depot in halifax.

even seen storys of them sending out coppers to wait in laybys etc after you keep speeding that way i.e. on the commute one day he could be sat there in the layby waiting to see you go past too fast and bust you.

I think that was for 'repeat offenders'. IE - people that would go up and down through the same camera(s) purposely setting them off. If it was just on 1 occasion it would be very hard for them to prove.

Obviously it would need to know what speed you're doing though to 'sense' you're going too fast. Calculates your speed in the same way a hand-held radar gun would, and if it's over the limit, will take 2 pictures.

They then get someone to go through the pics and check them over for accuracy (each white line represents 5mph). Hence, if it flashes when you're not speeding, the person checking will be able to see from the photos that you were within the limit.

Be careful because the police now have recognition teams that solely investigate cases where people set of cameras on purpose and has already resulted in prosecutions. Wink

Setting off the odd camera won't get you into trouble, however, if you're idiotic enough to think that you can do it everyday than you deserve to get caught...
