power commanders

Are power commanders specific to each bike, or is it just the looms that are specific.
Basically what im asking is, could i buy a unit for say a CBR and modify the loom to fit a VFR?

Some will fit cross-models but they have to be VERY similar. What you are talking about isn't straightforward at all.

I thought they might just be the same box of tricks, but maybe they have firmware built in that knows how that particular bikes fuel system works.

They do have different firmware and different fuelling tables across the models of PC/bike. Essentially they do the same thing, early ones (PC2) manipulate sensor inputs to fool the bike's computer into adding/removing fuel and later ones alter the injector timing directly and tap a sensor or two. Difficulties will be that different bikes will have sensors that have different values etc. It won't know or care what it's wired up to but will it do the right thing with the inputs it's getting?

When (If) the Dynapro Interceptor becomes available it will allow any harness to be wired to it via a multiplug. It's way better than a Power Commander in my opinion. It has a USB port for a USB memory stick for realtime datalogging on multiple channels. It comes with fuel AND ignition mapping capabilities too.

I agree with Geri with the Power Commander although if you could change the firmware (I'm not aware of any way to do it) I don't see why you couldn't move it from bike to bike.
