Brand new Aprilia RS 125 (restricted)

Because of all this credit crunch situation I'm thinking about getting a little bike for myself to go to/from work (2-3 miles). I've been driving a car for 10 years and have cat P in my license. My wife's got a car but we cannot afford 2nd car at the moment.

So I was thinking about buying a new bike. Is brand new Aprilia RS 125 worth the money (£3,5k)? I like how it looks like, in future I'd like to do full A test, but I think I would keep 125cc anyway as I need a cheap to run vehicle.

How is it restricted? Is it hard to de-restrict it later? Are they reliable?

They are not the cheapest of 125's to run. As far as the state of tuining goes they are at the top end of the ladder, being a 'sports' two stroke knocking on at 33bhp. They need expensive oil to run them properly, good servicing/tender loving and need to be treated well (warmed up etc). Servicing will involve changing the rings at or around 8000 ish miles I think. You should get a decent return for MPG, probably upwards of 45mpg depending on how you ride.

The restriction is such an issue and can be sorted fairly easily. I dont know about the newer models so someone else will have to comment on that.

Buying brand new means you will take a hit on the value when you come to sell it but thats your choice. If you can live with it then its no problem. At least you will get the peace of mind of a warranty! Bear in mind that it is your first bike and accidents/mistakes do happen and although you always feel bad if you drop a bike you somehow feel worse when its brand new and mint compared to an older one!

If your after cheap then the other end of the market 125's such as the CG would be right up your alley, if you want a sportier look then the CBR125 might be alright too.

As far as riding goes on the RS125 its an absolute laugh. They handle very well and are quite quick for a small bike, it will certainly suprise you if youve not ridden bikes before! Get your CBT done and then see how you feel!!

yeah, your only riding 2-3miles which seems like something that could even be done in the bus! just get any other 125cc 4stroke bike for little fuss. cbr125 if you like the sports bike look. xr 125 if you like the off road bike type look.

the hyosung GT125R would probably suit you better. its cheaper brand new, but the quality will lack compared to the aprilia.
i've heard good things about them, so maybe they are the good side of asian bikes.

I don't wan't anything too slugish. I'm quite heavy (80kg.. eh.. pizzas) and need some power to cope with that. And bus in my area is a problem.. it's only 3 miles to my work, but by bus it's more like 10 miles (bus to town center then change the bus to the one which goes from town center to my work lol).

Riding a bicycle is not an option.

Oh and 2 stroke engine is not a problem for me... I'm capable of fixing mechanical things myself.. I'm the one fixing my wife's car.. I used to fix and modify mine

As long as the bike can do 80mph I'm happy with it. 40-50mpg sounds sweet.. With my Astra I hardly could get 28mpg

if its only 2-3 miles why is a bicycle not an option? you could almost walk that distance. it used to take me 15mins to do the 3 mile route to work on a pushbike.

i certainly would not try to use the "credit crunch" as an excuse to buy a brand new rs125!!

no ive never been to northampton, yes i suppose it does depend on the route you need to take.

however i would strongly recommend against buying new. a new bike is a bottomless moneypit, particularly a 2-stroke like the rs125. and depreciation will be huge even on something as desirable as an rs125. have you factored in insurance on a brand new rs125 - you sound like you're a bit older but i bet it will still be a killer. trust me i made this mistake - i bought an sv650s brand new cos of the 0% suzuki finance thing. a year later i'm trying to sell it and no one wants it - if i *really* had to sell it now i would make a massive loss on it. and yeah i also said i would keep it for 3 years - everyone says that - in a year you'll be itching for something bigger. plus if its your first bike you'll probably drop it. do yourself a favour and buy an older cheaper jap bike in reasonable condition.

yeah, 2-3miles isn't far. Takes me 3-4minutes to cycle 1 mile. So you could prob easily do 3miles in under 15minutes. Would be good exercise too. You could make it your HIIT exercise which is the best form (for weight loss). I weigh around the same as you. im 15stone (85kg).

You make a massive loss on any vehicle new more or less. I bought an SV650 new on the 0% knowing fine well that I would lose on it. What I didnt count on in that case was just how shit the finish was on them and how crap they ultimately are. The reason I got it though was because it was brand new and I knew at that point no one had dropped it/crashed it/broken it, which sounds like what the original poster is saying.

I disagree that a new bike is a 'bottomless money pit'. You will lose on the value but you have the warranty for repairs, so other than consumables and as long as your sure whats bottomless about it.

If you know about the cost and are happy to accept it then so what? If your not going too far then get the RS125. The fact your not going to far is in your favour if you want an RS125, just go get it bud!

dont get me wrong - i dont reget buying the sv, its been a great first "big" bike. and i dont have a problem with the finish, or anything else with it for that matter. and i bought it knowing that i could afford it, and i dont have to sell it, its just that i dont use it anymore. but the depreciation thing really cant be ignored - i bought the sv new for £4200, i spent a bunch adding extra stuff to it, a year later i advertise it at £3100 just serviced - for 2 months with no response. the dealer offers me £2500 buy-back. sorry but you just dont get that sort of depreciation with a car, at least i dont think you do.

the rs125 is a great bike no doubt, possibly the best 125 money can buy - and it comes with a price to match. If the OP can afford it then i say of course go for it, but the "credit crunch" comment from the first post would imply that that was not the case and therefore i would advise to go for something more practical. thats all.

50cc scooter, you'd only ever need to take the one CBT - as you are a full catagory B holder then it will validate your catagory A forever

That is assuming that you passed your catagory B in the last decade or so and actually need a CBT to validate your Catagory P.

Under two grand new, £15 tax, silly - cheap insurance and 85 to 105mpg. You'd be putting £10 of fuel in it a month.

It's got to be the sensible choice to commute 3miles to work on...

For 3 miles to work I'd get a bicycle, if you claim you're heavy then it may just be what you need and certainly cheaper in the fuel and tax of a bike.

Or,

Why don't you get a road legal pit bike or monkey bike for £700 odd.

Buying a brand new RS because of the 'crunch' is a little odd as they are £3k compared to a 2nd hand one for much less.

Doesn't make much sense to blow 3.5k on what is essentially quite a fragile bike claiming 'credit crunch' as a valid reason.

Personally I'd say get a 2nd hand CG125 Honda or similar, sure they look wank but tough as nails and nice to ride until you get your full test. Even a CG will happily work with your weight, maybe more so than a revvy Aprillia.

Only my 2p worth but if you've got a hard on for the RS and money is no object then why not?

£3.5k was a bit much and I was not sure.. £3k is very tempting.

Oh.. and credit crunch is just an excuse to start riding motobikes

TBH as long as you keep it for a few years there is nothing wrong with buying new

No previous owner worries, no MOT or parts costs for a couple of years - check what they class as "consumable parts" on a 2T, tyres, chain, sprockets etc etc


The loss comes if you then sell 3 months later to upgrade

I was 100% convinced i was keeping the CG125 for at least 2 or 3 years, it lasted 6 months before it turned into a 600, lost ~£500 on that, if i had gone for used i would have lost a lot less

RS is a quicker bike though, if the CG could have got to, and held 80mph i`d have kept it


Just remember that a 2T needs looking after more than a 4T, keep on top of it and you will be fine
if you arent doing the maintenence yourself check how much your local garage charges
