How to do a decent handshake. It amazes me how many people I encounter in business that either have the feeble wet kipper handshake, or turn it into a macho bone crunching competition. Both are gay. Stop it.

Add yours to the list.

I shall think further on this subject and come up with something less directly relevant shortly Mr. Green

I was going to add that one, but thought it was way too obvious and would upset the little darlings Smile

I'd also add basic maths to the list. I mean real basic maths - I sold a bike to someone for £100, and he said he could only afford £50 a week. I said that was ok, and he replied "How many fiftys in a hundred?"

I kid you not.

Alphabetical Order means that Ahmed comes before Angela but after Abagail. Ahmed does not come first because he is Muslim.

We need to get a sense of perspective back into society, we really do.

I've never been one for numbers ("I am not a number, I'm a free man!") but there is nothing wrong with good old fashioned Alphabetical Order.

Thats not a good example my best example is when I went to buy some trainers and had a 10% off voucher, the girl at the till didn't know what to do and had to call her manager who also couldn't work it out eventually she went to get a calculator and worked it out.. Doh!

Or when I worked in catering a while back people would ask for certain things you'd say something like £6.35 please, at which they would open their hands and let you pick out the amount to be charged. Doh!

Or in school so how did you do on the exam? , I got 72% .....

Oh yeah out of what? Doh!

There was a girl working the till in a canteen on a customer site where I spent 18 months, she would pretty much keep giving you change until you close your hand and said thanks. Bit like a slow, broken, human ATM.

Problem is that respect has to be earned, not forced upon someone. I had some teachers I respected, and some I thought were complete cunts, but the system decreed I should respect them both. I was told I should respect my elders, but it was blatantly obvious not all elders were worthy of respect.

Roadcraft.

Seeing as almost all will end up driving a car/riding a bike later in life, and will spend a lot more time doing it than having to know who built the first tarmacadam roads in ye olde england, or what the cosign of an equilateral triangle is, it makes perfect sense to teach them early so there's fewer clueless idiots on the road in future.

And, How to run a household.

Teach them useful things they're going to definitely need to know, rather than a lot of old dry stuff that they can learn later, if they're interested.

Lastly, How to live in a world destroyed by nuclear weapons, where the only available food is radioactive dog.

Respect is one of those things that all older-than teenage people trot out. It is indeed something that needs to be understood that respectfulness does not just mean saying Yes Sir, No Sir.

But I think what is more important that simply saying "They should learn respect" is that they should learn to take responsibility for the consequences for their actions.

Manners

spelling (no text talk!)

etiquette (How not to speak like a twat)

how to dress

how to respect others

How to respect what doesnt belong to you

how to act like a decent human in public

how to control your anger and not call it a special need and claim you have an illness for being a twat.

independence is not becoming a drug dealers with a good customer base. (but probably would be tied in with the later said money management)

school is there for you , its your education you mess up, realising that early seminar.

how to be helpful! ties in with manners but needs explanation! like holding doors open and giving up your train seat for an old lady.
sex education (we didnt have that in school we had anti abortion education instead )

how to interact with older people without smashing their windows and stealing their cars.

Money management, it doesnt grow off trees! or your parents for that matter.

general home skills needed to become independant!

most young ones have to make their own mistakes and thats how they learn it would be good to guide them and let them know a bit about after school life before.

Hate to sound old fashioned Embarassed but I think I learned many of these skills from my parents rather than my teachers. There isn't the same family structure now as there used to be which puts a different emphasis on skills taught at school, but unfortunately the curriculum hasn't kept up with social changes. IMO the debate may be whether the emphasis should be on changing schools or (further) educating the parents Rolling Eyes

I can totally understand where you are coming from, however you are slightly wrong. Wink
Respect shouldn't first be earned, otherwise you would lack respect for someone in the first place. Respect should be a natural act towards others that is then lost if they don't respect you back - like your teachers for example, or it'll increase because they do respect you back.

Hey, I can live with being slightly wrong Smile

I do agree that there should be a common human decency that is offered to all and sundry, but that would be equal, whether they be a teacher, supply teacher, headmaster, dinner lady or janitor. I wouldn't blindly "respect" the headmaster more than the janitor, simply because of a hierarchy.

To be honest, the janitor (bless ya, Mr Humphries) commanded more respect from me due to the crap he had to deal with, literally.

Its more about having common human decency, rather than this "respect" word which is so overused these days.

And Tonka is right: there are several things in this list which SHOULD be being taught by the parents.

It's fair to say the school would "fail" much quicker without the Janitor than without the Headmaster! All jobs are important!

I think the key is having parents and schools working with (vague) cohension regarding these simple things.

Nursery and school have done very well so far in reinforcing the things I try to instill like manners, ettiquette, independance, social skills etc in my minions, however that would be wasted if they came home to useless inept twattish chav parents.

Likewise it would be almost a wasted effort parents instilling all those positive things in kids, if the school just let them disregard them all while there.

Home Ec/cooking/Domestic science was scrapped in favour of pointless, useless 'Food Technology' when I was at school.

So learnt the sum of fuck all regarding cooking and domestic stuff, luckily my Mum taught me to bake/cook/sew/use a washing machine, many kids these days don't get that. Evil or Very Mad Despite working full time and not living in the same house as my kids, I strive to do the same for them.
