Cylinder identification sensor

I fear my CIS (03 R6) may be up the spout.
Questions: What exactly does it do, and how do I get a new one? Google is being very unhelpful.

It lets the ecu know which piston is on it's induction stroke. Normally used for sequential injection where each cylinder is injected individually.

Depending on how sophisticated the ecu is a failure of the cis usually does one of 2 things.

Puts the ecu into limp home mode and revs are limited.

The ecu switches to banked injection which slightly increases emmisions and fuel consumption and sometimes causes drivability problems.

What makes you think it's duff? Sometimes fault codes can be misleading.

It should be a simple bolt off old one, bolt on new one job (access permitting). Go with a genuine one from a dealer.

I dunno how the r6 one works but Suzukis use a pin pressed into the camshaft, and a sensor on the valve cover picks up a signal from this pin so it knows when No1 is on a certain stroke. Sometimes (if the bike's been worked on/cams out) this pin gets knocked and the gap is wrong causing an error.

I believe it to be broken mainly due to the error code I'm getting:
11 - No normal signals are received from the cylinder identification sensor

When the bike isn't running I get a flashing engine warning light and the starter refuses to fire. However the bike will bump start fine, and run with no noticeable difference in performance, aside from a randomly flickering warning light (and i do mean flickering, like a faulty bulb) which seems to be having a knock on effect causing my headlight to flash in sync which caused no end of problems at junctions until I realised what was going on.
I am hoping it's just an electrical short somewhere that's causing this, as the bike runs fine which I imagine it wouldn't if there really was a problem? I'm just investigating what could be wrong as I won't have a chance to get the fairings off and have a look for a while.
From what I can see through the space behind the rad the CIS is still in place and the wires going to it seem okay, but until I can get in there and have a proper look I can't be certain.

Check all of your fuses. Make sure there's no corrosion on any of them. It could be a voltage drop due to corrosion which could cause faulty readings from the sensors. When the bike is running the voltage is higher due to the alternator so it might overcome the corrosion. Check all your connectors too, ignition barrel for instance.

Hmm the fact that you mention the ignition barrel is a good one - I've noticed over the past few weeks that some "jiggling" is required to get from Off to On. Related issue perhaps?
I will definitely check my fuses when I get a chance to get the fairing panel undone.
