PostPosted: 09:37 - 11 May 2009    Post subject: My various CG's Reply with quote

I recently got a call from a mate who was getting rid of his non runner '89 CG125, seeing as they're a decent bike I handed over one hundred of my hard earn pounds of the realm for it. Its got a folder full of reciepts and old mots, so its been sort of well looked after. Will be getting pics tonight and posting them up wednesday, but first a litl bit of its history.

My mate bought it last year for £550, he spent loads of money on it (new tyres, new chrome rear shocks, rear end plastic) before asking me to come service it for him. I went round drained the carb, tightened the chain ( read skipping rope) and sussed out that he was running on half choke which is why it was running badly. He then dropped it and snapped the clutch lever right off at the bolt, so I ordered one, bought it, fitted it and said he could pay me back the week after. He never paid me so I never did any work on it for him again. He managed to over tighten the chain, fill it with enough oil to reach the screw threads on the dipstick and put a Bandit 1200 Iridium spark plug in it. The spark plug was, in his words, 'there because it fits'. His next door neighbour drained the oil out and filled it back up to the correct amount and took a little pressure off the chain, but didn't have a spark plug and told my mate he needed to buy one asap.

Needless to say he didn't, then he didnt put oil in it and it burned a hole straight through the piston Laughing so a £90 rebuild was in order, he didn't have the bottom end rebuild so I reckon thats whats failed now, it has no compression so i also think the barrel was a crap cheap one.

Good points;
Frame is solid and unbent
Good tyres
New shocks
200 Mile Chain and sprockets (Good quality ones too, the same as the ones I use)
New exhaust
Big wad of paperwork
Had half a tank of petrol which I half inched XD
L plate was framed, just like a picture (even had proper mitre joints!)

Bad points;
engines covered in oil
Doesn't run
kickstart lever is bent
number plate is quite badly damaged
Seats been recovered, but the old cover is still under there Confused

not putting engine oil in it wouldn't result in a hole in the piston. Running it VERY lean would but no engine oil would cause a bottom end failure.

either way there was a hole in the piston as if somebody had taken an oxy-acetaline torch to it XD just happened that there was no oil in it. as promised here some pics, see if anyone can identify why it has no compression Very Happy

I think it was because the number plate was damaged, i can get one for £5.99 so will replace it. I'll take pics tonight and post them up asap. does anyone have a rough idea why the piston has been damaged like this? the bore is fine, if a little oily. could this have resulted from the previous owner not running the new top end in properly?

Are you sure the barrel isnt damaged or scored at all?
If not your lucky very lucky i'd even put the lottery on lol, Could of been caused by detonation or over heating, your bike has points ignition doesnt it? might need adjusting to get it running again.

Already seen that one lol, I'd been reading up on things before I saw it and that article just made it clear about the CBX550 piston having a domed top.

Turns out that after a quick hone the barrel was fine, had one very light mark that we couldnt get out. £41 later and i had it all back together, nicked the red bike tank cos it had petrol and it fired up after a few kicks Thumbs Up anyone want an '89 CG125 then? going for a good price Wink

I bought a runner for £150 in far better condition than yours, these bikes arnt worth alot. People asking for more than £500 for less than a near mint example of a twin drum model are dreaming. I've had 2 of these, and the most i bought one for was £500 and it was almost mint.

I disagree, you couldnt part it out for more than £100, regardless, my offer doesnt stand cos it was never an offer in the first place so this whole point isnt valid.

He could.

I've made well over £100 breaking my RX-S and I still have loads of bits left.

Cg's are no where near as needy for parts as an RXS, You can run a CG without oil and it will still keep going. And most bits on a CG are fixed with a mallet and screw driver. I got a set of 10 brake switches for the CG series for less than £8... New.
