Hey,
I've just managed to snag a project BMX for £10.
However, I have never had one or done one up.
Does anyone have any tips/advice? What parts should I avoid?
Also does anyone have any good parts websites/forums?
First thing on my list is front brakes, I'm watching a set on eBay locally. (Odyssey Evolver)
Thanks!

Not really into BMX but I do love my MTB's, BMX's are just too small for me and I can't get on with them at all although I've never really ridden one for more than 10 minutes at a time. I always get jealous in skateparks when BMXers seem to get so much more pump than me on their little wheels.
I suggest you buy Ride magazine (the BMX one, not the motorbike one) and take a flick through, I used to get it occasionally to spy on the small wheelers and they had a buy and sell bit in the back aswell as some inspirational photography which is always good for making you pumped to go riding.

First things first though I'd suggest you lube the chain, pump up the front tyre, go to your nearest skatepark and have a blast before you start spending loads of money on it. Loads of BMXers at my local park run no brakes so as long as you have one that works for now you might find that you don't even need a front brake.
EDIT: Just seen you don't have a brake at all... Get a back brake first because everyone knows skids are cool Junk the GYRO aswell because from what I've seen it just makes whatever brakes you have completely useless. Just run a long back brake cable for bar spins and tailwhips and you'll be fine ____________________ Now: '00 Kawasaki ZRX1100R - Past: '84 Yamaha DT125, '89 Kawasaki KLR600, '97 Yamaha XJ600N

Thats as rally frame. As already already suggested not worth the effort. You can buy my Hoffman 900 for £100 if you like. Mint condition. ____________________ If you can't spot the sucker in your first half hour at the table, you are the sucker. |

Think some of the last posters have missed the point.
It's a £10 bike for some shits and giggles, nothing hardcore, nothing I'm going out and doing anything spectacular with, just something to piss around on and learn about and have some fun on the way.
Thanks to KLR & Drew for some sensible and helpful replies ____________________ Mutley - 1988 Austin Mini City - Blog

This is a great forum for parts although you have to be quick.

This was mine, when I was into it. GT of some description, more than that I do not know.

The guy I bought it from said you didn't need brakes, please note this is fine until you are hooning back from school at lunch to play goldeneye, with your mate on the trick pegs heading down a steep hill. See how far putting your foot on the back tyre gets you then.
I crossed the line, when I fumbled my foot, managed to jam it into the spokes whilst travelling at speed, and had a nice painful accident at the bottom of a subway. In the end I fitted a rear brake, that had some gyro type gismo thing to allow you to spin the bars without tangling up cables.
I never got anywhere, could just about bunnyhop, and just about manual, badly. Attempts at using a vert ramp, usually involved gravity conspiring against my lack of skill, and I would just fall back in facing backwards and usually falling off. If you wrenched too hard on the bars trying to ride through one of those concrete bowls, the bars would fold flat to the frame, and again I would be chewing concrete.
In light of this, the most important bit on the bike for me, would have been a decent clamp/stem/nut thingy to hold the bars firmly, and prevent them from moving.
It definately takes balls, that I didn't have at the time. In my learning attempts and trips to skateparks, I just had several concrete faceplants and lots of bruises.
I used to ride it to and from school, it was fun, but as soon as motorised transport came along, that was the end of it. ____________________ So in other words, he stopped you for being flagrantly in posession of a motorcycle in direct contravention of the Hippies, Darkies and People Whose Face I Don't Like The Look of (Police Powers) Act. 1976 |

www.bikeguide.org is a very comprehensive website. the main
page has loads of articles about bike maintenance and will teach
you the basics, there's also a forum if you have any problems. Also check out sheldon browns website, always a good read. |
