Im coming up 17 in January and im starting to think about what to get.. car or bike. Still 50/50 at the minute.

Just wondering, when i turn 17, what bike can i ride if i pass my test? Is it a 125? Or is it anything restricted to 33.3 BHP? I realise this has probably come up on the forum before, i did try search...

Can i take that at 17?

Id prefer something bigger than a 125, iv got a Peugeot XP6 at the mo and iv had off road 125's in the past so im fairly confident i can ride something bigger if i can.

Right Brad - you will find the answers to this in the Duffers guide to getting a licence at the top of the page but I will reiterate

at 17 you can:

> ride a 125 on L Plate with a valid CBT
> take your A1 and be stuck riding a 125 for all time - but be able to take pillions remove L plates etc
> take your A2 and ride a 33bhp bike for 2 years until the restriction period is up.

There are a couple of bikes that bang out 33bhp more or less on the nose - the Suzuki Savage and the Honda Bros400 spring to mind.

Most large bikes can be restricted down to 33bhp - but to be honest with you anything over 50 bhp really is just will waving unless you are track riding.

Remembering its not quite as simple as 33bhp or 25kW, it not to be capable of exceeding 0.16 kW/kg

well, i can understand what and how exciting the feeling must be for you, there is no one to understand this better than me. i was not allowed to ride a bike when i was 17, and now at 31 i am fulfilling all my dreams of owning and riding one of my dream bike.
as far as your questions are concerned, i would suggest you to go for an A2, and for some time you can ride 33 BHP, and after crossing that period you can migrate to better and faster bikes!

have you had any previous experience in driving a car or riding a motorbike? probably not.
I did my CBT yesterday, and a 125cc felt fast enough. Even going about 20mph felt fast. Compared to being in a car, 20mph feels like a crawl. Personally I'd say learn in a car to get better road awareness, so that after afew years once you do your CBT, you'll have that slight edge. I've a much greater respect for bikers after doing my CBT yesterday, it demands a lot of concentration!

He just said he had has an XP6 and has had 125 crossers before, don't talk down to people with more experience than you.

my mistake, I duno why, i forgot about his second post. If you have the confidence go for it! It's always better to start young. My old man had a moan last night saying my mother doesn't like the idea of me getting a motorbike. But its something I wana learn, and have on my license. His poor arguement was 'I started riding bikes when i was 13, you have no experience'.
Well it has to start from somewhere I say. Rolling Eyes
