Do carburated R1s suffer badly from carb- icing and how cold does it have to be to suffer from this?

My last two bikes didnt suffer from this as they were FI bikes.

A friend of mine used to have 7r ninja and a srad 600 that suffered badly from this and he used to put socks in the ram air ducts and used the silkolene additive.

I used to believe him about the additive but not the socks!

Some carbs have heaters in the form of small water hoses from the cooling system or electrical elements on the float bowls, otherwise the bike can suffer from carb icing in very cold weather.

Especially if damp out I believe?

Its something that goes through my mind every time I'm on the 7R during the winter and colder months.

Hi

Carb icing occurs at low temperatures, but not when very cold. What happens is that the temperature of the carb is cold enough that it freezes the water moisture in the air. When it gets too cold there is not enough moisture in the air to cause a problem.

To be honest it would seem entirely possible for "carb icing" to occur with a fuel injected bike. Indeed possibly worse as going from the pressurised fuel system out the fuel would absorb heat. Countering that is that the fuel is injected under pressure and that the injector (and the cooling it causes) is after the throttle.

All the best

Keith

I thought carburated bikes were more prone to carb icing than Fi bikes.

My srads didnt suffer when I rode at below or just above freezing conditions.

Is that silkolene stuff any good or waste of my dosh??

What are the symptoms??

Appreciate your advice fellas.

Dont really want to ride the one and now thinking maybe a dr or old cbr 6 would be better for the winter months.

They are, but not really any particular reason why icing couldn't occur with a fuel injected engine.

Worst conditions seem to be just above freezing when it is foggy.

First symptoms are inability to idle. Likely as it gets worse it will have problems at progressively higher revs. My old FZ750 would refuse to run under 4000rpm and would about double its fuel consumption. Problem would occur with any running at any real speed. Tended not to occur at low speed (30~40 would be fine, but the issue would start within a few minutes of reaching an NSL road). Would clear after a few minutes at low speed (such as caught in traffic, didn't really want to try filtering with it playing up like that).

To be honest either could suffer. I have had it on a 125 2 stroke (although not that bad, the exterior of the carb was covered in frost), and I would suspect the CBR6 would be fairly easily prone to it.

All the best
