And let us not forget its easier, cheaper and raises more money to install a set of speed cameras than to upgrade a road (as they have done to a stretch of the same road further North) that is demonstrably dangerous

Agreed. The Girvan road has ALWAYS been dangerous. It's not the speed limit that's the problem, it's the road itself.

It is one of those roads that was designed during a period when the thinking was that overtaking was the root cause of many accidents. In their wisdom, they set about designing roads that constantly curved to and fro so there was no point where you could see sufficiently far ahead to perform a safe overtake.

Well, that was a pretty fucking stupid idea because what actually causes the accidents is people becoming frustrated by being held up then attempting to overtake when it isn't safe.

Roads that are also built like this include the A9, the A75 and the A66. Thankfully, they've undertaken a massive dualling programme on the A66 and it is now a pleasure to drive on. The A9 just keeps on killing people year in, year out and will continue to do so untill they make the whole lot dual carriageway.

The A75 is my personal nemesis.

Unless you're riding a bike, of course Smile.

Seven deaths over three years suggests draconian speed enforcement is far from the solution to such problems.

I quite enjoyed riding the A9. Sure it was a bit too 'slow for my bike', but there was enough space to over take easily and a significant number of the drivers had (relatively) excellent observation to notice me and pull aside.
Got warned of one police car and noticed the other a little too late... but think they were just staring curiosity at my fairing.
