I can feel and hear a little clonk from the back wheel of my CBR when I grab it at the top and bottom and give it a shake. First thought is obviously wheel bearings, the only thing is that it doesn't do it if you hold the wheel at each side (3 and 9 o'clock). Is that normal because I would have thought if there was play in the bearings it wouldn't matter whether you shake it top and bottom or side to side? The difference is that when I'm moving it top and bottom I'm putting a twisting force through the swinging arm bearings so is it possible it's these that are worn? I can't tell where the clonk is coming from even with my head up close so I'm not sure Rolling Eyes

Hi

Could be wheel bearing, could be swinging arm bearings (although to be honest they rarely develop a load of play) and could also be the suspension linkages (if you are lifting the wheel without realising it).

Get it on a paddock stand so there is no load on the wheel and then try.

All the best

You ought to be able to see a slight movement if it's the swingarm or suspension bushes.

Wheel bearings would normally "grumble" as you turn the wheel. Might be worth whipping the wheel off and having a feel of them. Remember there is usually one in the sprocket carrier too.

another sign of the bearings having play is the bike will seem likes its rocking to and fro when riding.

Are you referring to the swinging arm bearings? The reason I was checking the wheel/swing arm was because with the bike leant over it does feel slightly loose at the back end and does have a slight rocking motion over bumps.

Incidentally, and probably unrelated but the back wheel seems to lock up incredibly easily under braking. The back brake, though powerful, is not especially grabby and the tyre is grippy and in good condition so not really sure why that might be Confused
