Righto,

For some reason Live Messenger likes to eat up memory and CPU like there's no tomorrow (thanks VISTA!).

I'm after an alternative that is a little less memory hungry. Only really use it for chat, so not too fussed about webcam and funky emoticons.

Any suggestions?

Trillian:

https://www.ceruleanstudios.com/

Can have all your accounts in one app... MSN, ICQ, YAHOO and AIM etc

If you leave your account on and go away you can see when your accounts came and went offline..

i have been using pidgin for some time. Does what i need a messenger to do, send messages.

So no more nudges, pokes, kisses, pressing the search button instead of send and most importantly, no adverts!

I just use www.ebuddy.com, but rarely actually use it, so web stuff isn't a big issue for me.

I have used Pidgin and it's ok.
However, came across aMSN so going to give that a try.

What I'm looking for is an alternative that does support webcams.
Any suggestions?

Thumbs Up

Google Talk is cool (I use it to talk to Anita). It's the smallest chat application ever, and it's the most simplistic too (which appeals to me). It's not MSN obviously, so you'd need to get your mates to install it too, but it's well worth it if simply use it for text.

I like the fact that it's also available on your Gmail page so if you've got an account, you can use it on any PC without an install. I've also found the voice chat suffers less from dropouts than Yahoo or MSN messenger; probably because there's fewer people using it, but that suits me fine Smile

Cheers guys, will give a some a go tonight.

I've just got fed up, for no reason MSN Live eats up 98% of my CPU adn the laptop grinds to a halt! Might even consider rolling back to XP if I can find the drivers and a licence for it!

Well,

I installed aMSN and it's been a marked improvement. Also now back to firefox as it uses about 150Mb less RAM than IE7.

Vista can be blamed as it appears to be totally shit at handling memory! And any slight issue it ramps up the CPU to 99% which means EVERYTHING grinds to a halt!
