Oxford Grips - Troubleshooting help required

Hi,

I fit my new Oxford Hot Grips last night and all seemed well. When testing in the driveway they functioned perfectly. Cue me setting off for work this morning and finding that I couldn't switch them on! Nothing happened. According to the manual if it thinks the voltage is too low the blue light will flash, but this didn't even happen.

I pulled over at the services and removed the fuse and replaced it (it hadn't blown, I simply took it out and put it back in). I was back in action.

Fast forward to me coming home this evening. Half way home they simply went off. Same symptoms as this morning, no lights, no heat - nothing.

At home I put a volt meter over the cable (which is direct from the battery) and could see 13.xxx volts. I plugged it back in to the unit but nothing. After some time I removed the fuse and replaced again and the sprang back into life. I can see no reason why this worked but disconnecting the power lead at the connector and re-connecting didn't. Both should have achieved the same thing - removing power from the unit.

I know I can return them but would prefer to return as little as possible. I don't fancy having to undo all the cabling etc which I have finally managed to get fairly neat if I can help it.

Have you checked the wires around the fuse? If they're worn through and hanging on for dear life then bumps in the road etc could cause them to disconnect.

The cables seem OK. This was a brand new set I purchased on Wednesday night.

I'm just trying to track down if poss the faulty component so I don't have to remove and return the whole lot. It took me a fair while to get them fit in a tidy fashion and there's plenty of cable ties involved.

Apologies for stating the obvious, but did you press the on button down for 10 seconds? You need to press it a good few seconds for them to come on (stops kids turnig them on and flattening the battery).

Thanks for the tips.

I have tried repeatedly making sure good connections, no loose wires etc. I have also put another fuse in today to see if that helps.

I'll let you know how I get on - I am suspecting the fuse or carrier - although I did get 13.5 volts when checking the voltage at both sides of the white connector. Maybe there is a high resistance somewhere on the power line so the voltage is correct but the current is low.

I fitted mine about a month ago and had the same problem.

I was using some existing wiring that the previous owner had put in to power some hot hands (the big fat velcro round ones) as it had the same connector. The grips kept on turning off though.

He had wired the Hot Hands via a relay so they turn off when the engine does (sensible in my eyes). However after checking with the guide that came with the grips, I saw that it recommended fitting them directly to the battery, no relay.

After changing the wiring to go direct to the battery i've had no problems.
