So, they want me to pay for what Vista should have been? I'll still stick with XP.

Worth £300 of anyone's money.

And an upgrade to a new PC because hardware manufacturers have been told to only produce drivers for the latest hardware.

And all new software because your XP and Vista programs will no longer work.

So what's that - about £2K per PC? In the middle of a recession?

Sheer genius.

The underlying kernel system of Windows 7 is to be the same as Vista, so no new drivers will be needed.

It is essentially Vista Service Pack 2 akin to that of XP SP2.

So why should I have to pay for it?

Ah, so it's the "let's-sell-our-service-packs-that fix-some-of-our-fuckups-and-call-it-a-new-release" edition then?

Now it all makes sense. Gouge the poor saps for even more money.

The more of these threads I read, the happier I am that I changed over to Linux.

I quite like a bit of Linux every so often, but it just doesn't stack up in a corporate environment and that's a real OS killer.

I also don't believe it will ever take off for the home user, not yet anyway. It is gaining popularity as the average user becomes more technical, but its just not easy enough for the masses yet.

Tried it recently?

Download and burn an Ubuntu Hardy Heron live CD and have a play with it.

The only thing you need to fiddle into it are the non-free audio and video codecs which they can't include in the distribution due to US copyright issues. There are step by step guides on how to do this.

Everything else is point and click.

Some bits of hardware aren't supported (noteably some wireless cards) again the blame with this lies with the hardware manufacturers for refusing to make driver details available. Most stuff works right out of the box these days.

Incidentally. I have all my work computers (which still run windows) on open office. The boss was unsure, then when I showed him how much a corporate licence for MS office would cost, he was all of a sudden very interested.

How long ago? No more than a few of months...

If you are happy with what comes with your chosen build of Linux then all is well, but start looking for software which is even slightly outside the mainstream and you have to do some leg work. No big deal if you don't mind spending a couple of hours installing software but that just won't wash with the masses. It’s the same reason why most people don't service their own cars.

If Linux wants to be taken seriously by the mainstream home market the community has to simplify its offering. Cutting down the number of variants and making the software finding and installing process simple enough for even the dumbest of users to deal with will be a killer blow for MS.

Making the process of large scale role outs and centralised management as simple as the MS equivalents (WSUS, Sysprep, SMS etc..) will see it make in-roads into the corporate desktop.

As an open minded tech I don't care what people want to use, be it WinTel, Mac or Linux. All I want is a system that’s secure, easy to use and doesn't cost the earth. So far MS has the best offering. If a future release of a Linux flavour manages to convince me that it has made the changes I have mentioned above then I would ready accept it, until then I will stick to what works best for me and the company I support.

You mean like selecting the program you want off a list, checking the box next to it and clicking "Apply changes"?

I have used the software repositories in Linux, some with a command line and some with the GUI like that and I still posted the above, tells you something about how reliable they are. Wink

Sorry, Linux just isn't quite there, and I'm far from a Penguin hater.

Mind you. Linux has so far totally failed to carry out an automatic update that has installed a corrupt hardware driver (in place of one that was working perfectly well) that has necessitated a complete re-install of the whole operating system.

Unlike windows which has done that to computers at my work twice now.

Yes, Linux is good. I have used it before and tend to install it on laptops so they perform better. But for everyday use I can't stand it. The GUI is hideous, if XP looked like a kids building set, then Linux definately looks like it was made by those folks at Crayola.

For all the bad press Vista gets (mostly unjustified) it looks really good and as a general consumer that is important.

Don't get me wrong I feel vilified that my upgrade to Vista, only to be superseeded by Windows 7 in the space of a few years which in itself is only a minor upgrade despite Microsoft's attempts to dress it up as a major upgrade. I would hope that any people who bought a copy of Vista should get a discount on Windows 7, but of course it won't happen. I wont be going out of my way to install it. It'll be installed when I next build a brand new PC.

Linux refers to just the kernel. I guess your references to it being ugly are in respect to one of the many desktop environments or window managers you've seen and the way it was set up by default (many can be configured to look wildly different). There are some really nice looking GUI's that run on Linux, like Enlightenment, XFCE, Gnome, KDE4. There's dozens more that cater to every need - simple, complex, resource friendly for older machines, etc. Google any of those and you'll find lots of nice screenshots. Thumbs Up

Seriously, if it takes you a couple of hours to install some software, you'd be better off with an Etch-A-Sketch.

No, laziness is why people don't service their own cars. Given access to every tool possible, together with the manuals for everything for free, some people would still rather pay some crook to rip them off and do a crap job which has to keep going back to the shop for repair.

Linux doesn't need to "be taken seriously by the home market" or "deal a killer blow to MS". Linux (the OS) isn't in the marketplace so it doesn't need to compete. Sure there are commercial distros which compete with each other, but the money isn't in the OS, it's in the support services those companies offer.

Quote:

It wouldn't make any difference. Corporations exist purely to spunk money up the wall and over each other. I've written and sold software to companies in the past that was worth (back then) maybe £15 per copy. They were happy to pay £1500 per copy. You couldn't pay people like that to use a free OS

Absolutely bang on the money.

Apart from the security bit.

And the cost bit.

And the ease of use bit.
