So you're in a car with which you're unfamiliar, it's one you just bought, or borrowed or hired. You need gas but as you pull into the gas-station it's "Oh sh!t, which side is the filler-cap on...?"

Do you guess, get out and look or...?

No you just park at a pump and if you've guessed wrong you just pull the pump to the other side.

They are designed to reach both sides.

Confused

(Unless you can't drive and park 4 feet away from the bumps, or have a HUGE car, but it works on my focus with loads of space to spare)

Agreed, the clue is on your dashboard gauges.

Is there a general rule that LHD cars (those originally manufactured in LHD countries) have the filler on the right, and RHD cars have the filler on the left, so the driver doesn't clonk the pump with their door when they get out?

Doesn't the little petrol pump icon on the fuel gauge point to the direction of the filler cap or something.

Which I think answers my question as Honda's are RHD so the filler is on the left.

Still don't understand it.

Cap on the left.
Gauge on the right.

Opposite side or the same side, whats the guide or rule of thumb?

Well I think that RHD cars (Japanese and British) have the filler on the left, and LHD cars (everything else) have the filler on the right.

Though I think Ford and GM (Vauxhall/Opel) could be the exception to the rule as they make cars all over Europe.

So erm, I dunno if there is a rule... Thinking

Hi Hetzer.
If you are still in the car on your laptop out side the station waiting for an answer it's probably best to just jump out and have look. Thumbs Up Smile

The thing about RHD/LHD isn't true, our fiat has the filler cap on the drivers side, as does my Audi.

But the logo should have a picture of which pump you want to pull up at, i.e. the nozzle is on the right in the pic, the cap is on the left and vice versa.

Some fords have a little arrow by the picture of the pump on the gauge pointing in the direction, some cars have the side that the hose comes out of the pump(pic on fuel gauge) on the side the caps on, others you just guess :lol .I usually just stretch the hose over though.

Thats all well and good unless your in a 306 Razz

Just like me and my brother standing in a petrol station in barnsley after he had just bought his 306, wondering A: How the hell you open it, and B: which is the fake side, pulling at both thinking it must open like most normal ones, only to find that is a leaver hidden inside the car Rolling Eyes Laughing

I'm presuming you got an e-mail saying the side the nozzle is on the petrol gauge icon is the side of the filler neck?

It's another myth, like the one that says you can open your car with your mobile and someone operating your spare key fob at home.

Hi

To screw up ideas of lhd / rhd sourced cars and the side of the petrol pump, Alfasud based cars (so 'sud, Sprint and 33) had the filler on the left, others Alfas have it on the right (even those made at the same time as the 'sud based ones).

Personally I tend to just go to the emptiest pumps. The pipe will almost always reach.

All the best

Keith

kind of reminds me of something Jason said once about all of those 650cc BMW bikes , that you put fuel in under the seat or something and people get dead confused.

You just park as close to the pump as possible and reach the hose over if your wrong?

As for the guage thing, it has nothing to do with what side the filler cap is on.

Also, gas-station? Would that be just off the freeway then?

Some cars do have the nozzle on the side of the fuel cap, I'd bet it's about 50% of them. Laughing As for the fords some 100% have an arrow telling you which side it's on.

Focus dash pic, large arrow next to the pump.
