aye we need monitoring and itl" only cost about 235 quid each so good deal if you ask me,terroism is becoming to wide spread a problem especially when organized over the net,and mobile phones allow terrorists to contact one another etc...these measures are absolutely vital if we are to have our safety assured to us.

The thing is terrorists ain't stupid they will just come up with code words and or cyphers (note encrption in the UK is obselete as you can be put in prison for not giving your encryption keys to the police).

Which means this system is useless...

All it will be used for is smearing of protestors who have a point.....

sort of crosses a bit with a speech from Deus Ex ages ago where in the absence of God , people crave surveillance as a form of being justified to be important enough to watch....

Every call you make, every e-mail you send, every website you visit - I’ll be watching you.

That is the hope of Sir David Pepper who, as the director of GCHQ, the government’s secret eavesdropping agency in Cheltenham, is plotting the biggest surveillance system ever created in Britain.

From his office in the agency’s famous “doughnut” building, Pepper is masterminding an innocent-sounding project called the Interception Modernisation Programme.

The scope of the project - classified top secret - is said by officials to be so vast that it will dwarf the estimated £5 billion ministers have set aside for the identity cards programme. It is intended to fight terrorism and crime. Civil liberties groups, however, say it poses an unprecedented intrusion into ordinary citizens’ lives.

Aimed at placing a “live tap” on every electronic communication in Britain, it will dwarf other “big brother” surveillance projects such as the number plate recognition system and the spread of CCTV.

Pepper and his opposite number at MI6, Sir John Scarlett, are facing opposition from mandarins in the Treasury and Cabinet Office who fear both its cost and ethical implications.

The spy bosses say a central database is essential to “capture” the array of communications between terrorists planning to attack Britain. Erm the PRC have decided to use the million face project at the border crossing in Gunagzhou they have installed face recognition cameras and installed a gigantic computer to it, it can achieve a rate of about 200 faces every 10 seconds, which is better than the 1 every 30 seconds...

the UK government has expressed an interest (note this is only on the PRC side of the border!)

We've had one supposed terrorist organised attack in this country, and one pathetic car fire yet it's deemed necessary to do all this in the name of preventing any further incidents. Sorry, but the IRA were a million times more real and this sort of crap was never proposed (albeit not as possible technology wise) but this is just one of the endless invasive schemes. It's all about getting absolute power, eroding all forms of privacy for nothing other than total control. Why don't they ask the citizens what they want for once instead of just asking themselves, seems to be the government thinks democracy means giving their colleagues a choice not the country.


Reading all the comments on that news article you see endless people saying, what's wrong with this country why don't people protest and complain you're all useless. I suppose those people have their train tickets booked for London the following day and are ready making their banners

I've always suspected all these anti terrorism powers were not actually for fighting terrorism.

In that the writing is on the wall , much as I've tried to warn people I am in effect a modern day Cassandra , the woman in greek times who had the foresight to be able to tell the future , but was cursed that nobody would ever believe her.


The UK economy has reached a game over situation , even inflation will not work, as the 500bn bank bail out plan and the civil service pensions are INDEX LINKED which means you can print out as much money as you want but the debt remains the same %.


And as such anti terrorism powers will be used to supress uprisings, and tianamen square the population when these turn into riots, people may well have too much to lose now to risk it all and take up arms, but as many have commented on various threads cut backs here and there are meaning what people have is diminishing.
