My newly acquired bike is proving abit troublesome in regards to the speedometer.
Today we replaced the speed drive gear with a new one (there was clear evidence that the old one was worn out). At first, I never noticed it working properly. But on the last half mile before reaching home it started working. I came indoors for about 20mintues, then left to go somewhere on the bike. The speedo worked a little, but then stopped after a while?

What could it be? What are all the components that could play a part in the speedometer not working? Also, the lights do not light up on the dials.
Speedo gear, speedo cable, what else?

There must be something slightly loose thats causing the speedometer to work every now and then.

Have you checked that the cable is properly seated in the back of the clocks? The lights will be unrelated as you have a mechanical speedo. Probably the little bulbs in the clocks have gone, or the supply to them.

Cheers

There is some loose-ness near the area where the speedo is attached the the bracket, which is near where the speedo cable runs into the back of the instrument panel. I'll have to wait for my old man to come home so that I can use his tools. I will open these up, perhaps the speedo cable is loose within the insturment panel?

On a side note... My right indicators. they do not indicate consistently as the left indicators, there's a clear difference between the 2 patterns, and the left indicator indicates more normally.
What could be the fault here?Turn signal connectors? Bulb on its way out?

In regards to the speedo cable, if it was damaged it would simply not work correct? It's not something that would work periodically?

Looking at the speedo cable, theres a couple of centimeters left to be screwed further into to the cable guide? So maybe this needs to be more tightly screwed in? I will have to remove the headlight to get at it better with some pilers.

Also, I've noticed a noise that occurs before the left indicators come on. it ticks/buzzes for a second before accentually indicating. so there must be something mechanical that needs replacing?

the ticking/buzzing is most probably a sign of your indicator flasher unit being unhappy.
as for the speedo (im assuming its not a digital speedo) take off both ends of the cable and check they are intact and in good nick, and put them back in. if your not sure about the bottom end take off the top and fasten it somewhere visible, and drive for a bit to see it rotates. to test the top connection take the bottom end of the cable off and put it into the chuck of a drill and set it going.
the lights inside will either be bad bulb or a loose connection, so wriggle the connections and replace the bulbs if it dont work. if it is the connector clean them with wd40 and apply some dielectric grease if you have any

hope that helps

finally a reply Embarassed

so what would I do with regards to the indicators? MOT is due early jan, and I want this sorted so i have piece of mind for when that comes around. it does indicate, just not as well as the left indicator (it does indicate, but for a fraction of the time that the fully functioning one would blink on)

as for the lights in the instrument panel. I changed the bulb, and it works fine. - - Sorted!

Now its just the speedo. My old man has a 4000watt drill, we will try it at different points (on the speedo, again on the cable) to see which could be faulty. I hope its not the speedometer, as this would be a costly replacement right? it is unlikely that the problem will be with the speedo, and more so with just the speedo cable seizing or wearing out? There was evidence from replacing the speedo gear, that the gear was worn out, so probably the cable is too.

thank you for your reply btw!
