Any general advice?

Looking at my bills, it seems like they are 'back-charging' me if their prices go up in the middle of a month,
ie: Prices go up on the 10th and they charge me the higher rate for the month as a whole.

Is there any way to avoid this, apart from reading the meter every two weeks and reporting it to them?

Perhaps a higher capped tariff is the way to go, and then sit pretty as prices exceed that higher rate in the coming months?

PS. If I hadn't installed a new gas boiler only three years ago, I'd be fitting a wood burner now!!

Hi

How they should be charging you is an estimate of your consumption pre / post price change.

All the best

Keith

Agree with Keith. Price changes should not be applied retrospectively. If they are doing so, contact ofgas, that should sort them out.

They should be pro-rating the bill based on usage and timing of the increase.

i.e. if you use 1000 units between 1/7/08 and 31/10/08, and they increased the price on 01/10/08, you should only be charged the higher price on 250 units*

*assuming all months have the same number of days.

Not sure about this one as there was an enormous "hoo haa" a little while ago over people letting their meter / bills run on estimates, then when they finally provided an actual reading the units were all charged at the latest rate. Apparently, this was seen to be the Consumer's issue as they should provide actual readings, but I'm sure there will be lots of web discussions about on the legalities for you to check.
