Hi
The lights and indicators on my XR250R are playing up, they just flicker constantly, and if i rev it too much the headlight bulb blows. Can someone point out on this diagram the part i need to replace?

https://www.motosport.com/dirtbike/oem.php?make=HONDA&type=DIRT&model=XR250R&year=1997&groupId=13666

Will this fix the problem?

Many thanks
Ed

Could well be the regulator. Take it that it's a 12volt system?, put a multimeter across the battery terminals and run the engine. Rev the bike and you should see the voltage rise, different bikes have different maximums but between 14-15volts is normal and safe. If you're getting over 15v then that's your problem- excess voltage blowing the bulb and the regulator is at fault, so replace it with the second link one (part No5 on your first link.) If you're getting normal voltage then it's probably a wiring problem, shorting out when you rev up- possibly the vibration making it worse when you rev it.
The wiring may not be brilliant to start with, whichever fault you have, the constant flickering could be either the higher voltage bridging contacts or a short.

Hi

Does sound like it could be the regulator. However it sounds like some kind of AC electrical system (hence no rectifier). Regulator is what is used to control the voltage (rectifier turns AC to DC, on most bikes they are combined into a single unit).

Also, if it doesn have a DC system and a battery then check the battery isn't out of "water".

All the best

Keith

The bike doesnt have a battery. What i understand with my limited knowledge of electronics is.. the generator puts out different amounts on power depending on the revs, and the regulator smoothes this out to give a constant amount of power. but on my bike if the reg is bust then the lights will flicker and eventually the bulbs blow if its revved too high. Does that make sense?

And will any regulator work or must it be one from that bike?

Yep it regulates voltage to a safe level for the electrical system, you should still be able to check what it's putting into the system without a battery by putting the multimeter across the output terminals when the engine is running. It's common to swop reg/recs on bikes for better ones eg Yam onto Hondas even though they have slightly different wiring, don't know how easy a plain regulator might be- if it's more model specific or not.
