Bit of a discussion with a welsh fella at work today who is adament that wales would be better off if it was its own country with its own government etc.

So what would happen if we woke up tomorrow to find that Hadrians wall and Offers dyke had been rebuilt so that all 3 countries were left to do their own thing?

Bit of a random post I know but could it happen?

England would become an gas importer as Scotland I think is where most of the North Sea gas goes to. Also England would lose out on lots of other industries which take place in Scotland and the end of the M4 corridor.

I wonder what would happen to the British military with their bases being in different countries.

All the tramps on London Underground who ask, "are yeh alright pal?" would become illegal immigrants and have to go home.

Also, all P.E. teachers would have to get work permits from the British embassy in Cardiff.

LOL Trust me when i say all countries bar England would slide dramatically

Its only the old empire that means Britain has any foothold in world affairs.

Most Foreign countries think Britain/England is the same thing

Didn't seem to do Eire any harm.

I reckon Scotland has a lot going for it. Leaving oil aside, the UK government doesn't include alcohol duty in any of its calculations of how much money Scotalnd produces when discussing the possability of fiscal autonomy.

Boils down to the SNP say we are x in the black, Labour say we are x in the red. I read that as breaking even.

Then we need to grab back the sea boundries that were reassigned to england just before the birth of the Scottish parliament, instigate an Icelandic style fisheries policy and we're cooking by gas.

To be honest I'd move to Scotland if the GB split up. I have always thought I wanted to live there and the only reason I didn't go to university there was because all of them said that I needed A-level maths to start the course, where as I was only going to get AS-level maths.

Such a beautiful place with a lot to offer. Definitely like it up there. However I have only been up there a few times. Although cycling to Ben Nevis was a big eye opener and gave me lots of time to take in the scenery. Very Happy

Hi

Scotland would lose out on the oil. The current sea boundaries are very good to Scotland, but if there was such a change then no reason the sea boundaries wouldn't as well. A large amount of the oil would be in English waters if the sea boundary was a continuation of the land boundary (which is generally what happens).

Oh, and as the Royal family are basically the descendents of the Scottish royal family they would have the bill for that as well Wink .

Overall I don't think it would do anyone any good. Wales would lose out big time and have to depend on subsidies. Not that plenty of other countries haven't done nicely from subsidies.

All the best

Keith
