Hey up...

So I've seen another job I'm interested in in another company and have got to the application form stage. However on asking my line manager and team leader to be my references they've both said they'd be happy to provide personal references but couldn't provide them on behalf of the company - any idea why?

I've aked them but not received a reply yet... just wondered if this is the done thing these days or if any of you have come across this?

Thumbs Up

Many companies have a policy of only HR being allowed to provide references.

It's a bit sketchy as to what you are and are not allowed to say in a reference, so many companies have taken an "easy" route out. Only HR are allowed to give references and they will only confirm the dates of your employment, and possibly your job title.

I wouldn't worry about it. The company you're going to is likely to be aware of policies like this. The HR reference will do fine for confirming you did work for the company you claim you did, and the personal references are great for proving you're a decent person and good employee.

Best of luck with the application.

My GF does CV's professionally. Drop me a PM and I'll put you in touch, I'm sure she'll take a look at it.

Cheers

Al

Thanks much appreciated! Thumbs Up However they've already got my CV and I'm now having to fill in an application form - I can't tell you how much I hate doing those!! Evil or Very Mad

I've now found out it's company policy and the norm so I'll stick with the personal references for now - had me panicking for a bit there though - not that I've got anything to panick about! Wink

Have they asked for references; I just put 'references available on request' and sort it out later if needed.

I'd be a little iffy about asking more senior people I work with for references until I've been offered the job; if you don't get the job, it may look bad on you in the future if there's chances of promotion, pay rises etc ("well, he's going to be gone soon anyway...").
