What's the advantages of using super unleaded in a 125cc? I heard someone say it damages more than good but I was curious to hear what people think. Obviously I know it's not going to give me a 5000BHP boost and that's not what I'm looking for.

doubt it will make much difference. If you notice anything its probably in your head.

just higher octane rating from 95 to 98 or 99 I think.
depends where you buy it from.

just burns better meaning a more complete and efficient burn.

Also has added detergent to help clean your engine a little.

Hi

It will give no benefit at all. Unleaded is 95 RON and super unleaded is normally 97 RON. A higher octane rating alone will not give you any more power (indeed, will actually lose you power as higher octane fuels generally have a very slightly lower energy content by volume, but not anything noticeable between 95 and 97 octane). What higher octane fuel does allow is for you to run a higher compression ratio, more advanced ignition timing and / or more boost. On a 125 bike none of those can be changed on the fly, and if you did raise the compression or advance the timing to take advantage of higher octane fuel then you would not be able to use normal unleaded without a good chance of burning a hole in the piston.

All the best

Keith

What Kickstart said. It makes no difference on standard settings unless you have something like a BMW which can tell the difference between the fuels on the fly using a knock sensor.

Did absolutely nothing for my DL1000 in fact fuel economy went down in the week I used it.

My Dart gets Shell Optimax and a dash of nasty lead replacement. I think it runs a little smoother on the Optimax.

The manual for my Cagiva W8 specifies 98 or 100 RON fuel. Shocked It gets 95 (and probably has for all of its 6500km life) and doesn't complain. Laughing

The 600RR (2007 onwards) apparantly has a knock sensor - I can't normally tell to be honest though - the only fuel that seems to make a slight difference is the Shell Ultiwhatver thing.

The response just seems a bit more crisp and sharp with that. I only put super in occasionally as the added detergents can help clear the engine a little - and also a little redex.

On a 125 though I'd be amazed if you'd notice much if at all, prob not worth the additional expense.

Could be my imagination, but the NSR definitely feels more responsive using Shell Ultiwhatver, compared to standard stuff.

I tried it in my CBR600 FW;

I'd had the bike for a year and to the mark it gets 140 miles from a full tank of normal premium unleaded or whatever it's called.

Once that 0 starts crawling over I can feel the engine start its stuttering, no matter how I ride it's always the same. If I do motorway all day its 140 miles, if I'm revvin up the country side its 140 miles, if I'm just doing a pootling to work its 140 miles... okay, I think you've probably got the jist.

Anyway, Tried the high octane stuff; no difference whatsoever in performance, everything felt absolutely the same except I only got 120 miles out of the full tank and its cost me nearly £3 more.

Can't see it being worth it.

I tend to put the expensive stuff into my cg

a) for the cleaners (Although the redex probably does a better job)

b) Because I could never afford to do so in a car! When the week's commute has barely touched 4 litres, I do like to splash out a bit Very Happy

A person I know did it on another forum. fuel economy marginally increased. But the slight increase was no where near enough to balance out the extra price paid. Just use normal petrol

I only used BP Ultimate in my RS50 and I don't think it made a bit of difference.

Not that I tried the other stuff Wink

The Badger drinks V-Power with a good dash of octane booster and a hint of Castrol R. This stops the compression ratio eating my piston and were it comes to Badgers economy is not even in the equation.

I get enough more miles out of a tank of optimax on the H100 to make it worth buying and it doesn't pink as much when you hit 70mph.

I can notice a bit of a difference in the R6 but, the biggest improve i found was when i put it in my old Honda CR500. I used to absolutely love the stuff.
I have found the BP stuff isn't as good as Shell Optimax. An the tesco high octane stuff is the worst of the three.

Give it a try its the only way to see if it works for you or not. Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

I switched to Optimax on my Volvo T5, the mpg went from averaging 22mpg to 29mpg - even with a slightly heavy toe.

Effects of having a turbo, and being able to vary the boost to take advantage of the higher octane fuel.

Our car is noticeably quicker on higher octane fuel than on normal unleaded. Switching from 4* was a pain.

All the best
