Grip in the cold...

I was thinking last night, how much is grip effected by the road temperture? If your tyres are warm, would there be enough grip for a spirted ride? Or should you be carefull at this time of year even if its not wet/icey?

Makes little or no difference after a decent length ride. Yo ujust need to give them more time to warm up. So instead of 5-10 minutes in summer it's more like 15-20 minutes.

My first kneedown on my old 400 was at the end of October at about 11:30 at night after a 30-40 minute ride, so the tyres still get plenty warm enough even in winter.

I agree - but its far harder to get them upto a good temperature - and keep them at heat.

They loose heat much quicker, driving though damp points cools them more, wind chill is colder etc.

I notice riding back from London in the summer results in a tyre that has stuff stuck to it (stones/grit etc) and the tyre is very hot to touch with a bare hand. In the winter i find it very very difficult to get it anywhere near this heat.

Although I guess it depends what temperature needs to be at to operate effectively? I might only need to be warm rather than hot.
