first service question yamaha r125

Hi i went today for a first service with yamaha yzfr125 to Exeter's Bridge Motorcycles. That is the nearest dealer to where i live, i bought my bike in Birmingham ( the only place that had them in that time), and i thought the first service will be free, but i was charged £15 for filter and oil and £80 for labour, damn its quite expensive isnt it? Guy told me that i will dont have to pay for labour only if i take it to the place where i bought it. But i still dont understand why do i need to pay for service in yamaha dealer, do i need to pay for all of the services? When i bought a new C4 in 2005 i didnt pay for any service never ever. As i can see its not the same with bikes. 100 pounds seems to me like a rip off for bloody labour ( changing oil and filter , checking lights and similar bulshit). And other question do i need to do services only in yamaha dealership or in any bike service.

£80 sounds really expensive for a 30 minute job and that includes lubing all the pivot points and checking over everything.

I could rattle first services off well fast when I worked for a dealership, especially Speedfights. I could do a full service in 15 minutes

Legally you do not have to have a service done at an official dealers now... but it must be a VAT registered business and if you were to make a claim on the warantee they could cause problems if they claim the issue was due to dodgy work.
Some car places now offer free servicing as part of the deal to try and get you buying from them; these kind of deals haven't extended to bikes yet that I know of.

Buying new bikes is a mugs game, I've always thought; for those with money to burn or who are soon to burn money they can't afford (I bought a more expensive bike this year and it didn't dispel the thought).

I got a 'free' first service on my cg when I bought it but you will probably always have to pay for any consumables (i.e. oil, filter etc). I'm amazed that you have not had to pay for any servicing done to your c4 though...... I don't know anyone who has had servicing done to any of their vehicles for free .

Also it's entirely up to you where you get your bike serviced (you can even do it yourself (like many people on these forums do). The £100 labour is rather steep though for such a quick job. The last time I took my bike to get serviced the garage were charging something like £50 an hour.

Most new bikes have their first service done 'free' by the selling dealer, although it is only the labour that is free - you have to still pay for the parts.

It has to be done by the dealer that sold the bike as this 'free' service is actually included in the price that you paid for the bike in the first place, hence if you take it to a different dealer they will charge you as they are getting nothing out of it.

It is a service provided by the selling dealer to you, rather than an offer that Yamaha provide hence why it can't be honoured anywhere across the dealer network.

The dealership you bought the bike from would have made money from selling the bike to you. Why should another different dealership that have recieved no profit from you buying that bike give you a free service? Althought they both represent Yamaha they are still indepent Buisnesses. Yes the service is expensive, but they are a main dealer it will always cost more, if you don't like it dont do it. With my bikes I let main dealer do the major services and I do the minor.

That's what I read somewhere a while ago; I think there were some other alternatives, but forget the details. May not have been correct, but I believe it seemed like a trustworthy source.

don't forget that valve clearences etc "should have been checked at the first service.
