Hello just wanna pick the brains of you mile munching tourer'y kind of things

A member of the family going to look at a ZZR400 import today just wondering if theres any things to look out for and also do you think the restrictor kit for a uk and import 1's are the same

Are parts for imports harder to come by or are the parts the same ?

Posting for a non user Thumbs Up

If it's an import of an official UK model(so a parallel import) then it's exactly the same as the UK bike except for the clocks and headlight, so the restrictor kit, and spares back up will be good.

If it's an import of a non-UK model(so a grey import) then you may find you'll struggle for spares and a restrictor kit, so it could be best to check out the FI international site first.

Doesn't it use a detuned ZXR400 motor?

The zzr400 from what i know is a grey import.
Was never officially sold in any number over here.
Decent enough bike, suspension would likely need looking at now.
Can pick them up for between 500-1000 anymore then that and it had better be mint and low milage.

I'm lead to believe that it's a sleeved down version of the zzr600 motor and completely different to the zxr, a fair few of the 600 parts will fit and there's loads of them been broken.

I had one as a hack for a few months last year. The frame is the same as the 600, all panels are the same. I was under the impression it was a sleeved 600 motor, but might be wrong.

In fact, I had a ZXR400 just before the ZZR, and the power delivery was totally different, so I can't see it being a detuned ZXR engine.

I paid about £400 for a taxed & tested. It failed MOT on front discs, and I couldn't locate any decent used ones and new ones were £200, so I ended up selling it for £300 with no MOT.

Suspension was, erm, soggy to say the least. Very comfy to ride, (far to comfy for my liking Laughing ), and it even had hazard lights and a fuel gauge.

Coming from a ZZR600...

As mentioned, the front disks warp easily, the fairing inners crack easily if the bike is dropped or has a scrape, the fuel guage will have you marvelling at how useless it is, the centerstand decks pretty easily so thats a good thing to look at to see if it's been ridden hard.

The engine in mine never missed a beat, just listen out for camchain rattle. If you can get a test ride be sure to stick it in second and give it some gas, if it pops into neutral your probably best walking away unless you fancy a gearbox rebuild at some point.

I had one for 2 years nice bike till 2nd gear failed. Its a grey import, never sold officialy in this country.

They are restricted to 115mph via the CDI unit, this can be removed by fitting a 600 CDI. They are big heavy bikes and use a sleeved down 600 motor, ram air soinds good but they eat brake discs chains and sprockets.

Parts are easy to get hold of because you can just use ZZR600 parts. Bar from a few engine internals.

As for 2nd gear, this is a huge gremlin. The selector dog wears quickly causing it to drop out of gear under load. The part itself is £5 but it needs a full engine strip to fix it.
