Well I was a bad boy, I just got done for speeding ... I have no problem with that, but I do have a problem with getting an offence code recorded on my licence which isn't the correct one.

I was caught doing 65 in a 50 (A725), i.e. a public road and the relevant list of offence codes for speeding are as follows

SP30 Exceeding statutory speed limit on a public road.......... 3-6
SP50 Exceeding speed limit on a motorway.......... 3-6
SP60 Undefined speed limit offence.......... 3-6

Therefore, with my basic understanding of English I expected to get an SP30, i.e. I was speeding on a public road (not a motorway) under normal road conditions ... lo and behold they gave me an SP60!!

Anyway after checking what the offence codes were and also finding out some interesting information about the SP60 code, I was convinced that I should have been given an SP30, so I phoned the district court where I had just gone to pay the fixed penalty.

After a five minute discussion, during which I discovered that my district court uses the SP30 to mean speeding in a 30 limit, the lovely lady I was speaking to agreed to change the SP60 to an SP30, and it was at this point (even though I got what I wanted) I played my trump card ... the SP60 code was invalidated in December 2005.

I found a few websites which had the SP60 as the topic of conversation, namely as being handed out incorrectly (down south) when an SP30 code should have been used, including one which had a copy of an email response from the DVLA confiming that the SP60 code had been invalidated.

So I told the lady at the district court who was extremely interested to hear this, although adamant that the current literature from the DVLA still lists it (although the website does not). I informed her that the DVLA had confirmed it verbally and I would pass on an email response as soon as I received it.

Got the reply and forwarded it today (see below) ... so make sure if you get done for speeding that they give you the right code Thumbs Up

Note: This subject was covered a while back on BCF and other forums, but it shows that it is still happening.

The emails ...

Thank you for your email.

On checking further I can confirm that SP60 is no longer a valid code.

However, we can not alter endorsements on your licence without being advised to do so by the issuing courts.

Again, please contact the court in order to have this amended.

The court will then contact us to update our records.

Kind regards

Hi Lynne,

Thanks for the info with regards going to the courts to have the correction made, but you have not answered my question with regards the invalidation of the SP60 offence code in December 2005.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe it is the DVLA which regulates the offence codes and is therefore the correct place to contact with regards a question over the validity of a code, i.e is the SP60 offence code a valid or invalid code?

All the best ... Barry

Thank you for your email.

DVLA do not issue points or endorsements.

We keep driving licence records and note points on the licences as advised by the Courts or Fixed Penalty Office.

Please contact the issuing Courts or FPO for further advice.

Kind regards

Subject: Speeding Offence

To whom it may concern,

I have recently been charged with speeding at 65mph in a 50mph limit on the A725, and elected to pay the fixed penalty.

I expected to receive an SP30 endorsement (exceeding statutory speed limit on a public road) but have instead received an SP60 (undefined speed limit).

1) It is my understanding that an SP60 offence code relates (or should that be 'related', see question 2) to things like speeding through roadworks etc. I however was on a public road (A725) under normal road operating conditions, i.e. no roadworks, very light traffic etc and the offence code should therefore be SP30 ... exceeding statutory speed limit on a public road. Can you confirm this?

2) Can you confirm that as of December 2005, the offence code SP60 was invalidated?

3) Basically I have been endorsed with the incorrect offence code, so how should I have the endorsement on my licence corrected?

Thank you, Barry

I did get the SP60 changed to an SP30 (see 3rd paragraph under speeding offence list) ... possibly because I phoned up about it the same day and went in the next to get it changed Thumbs Up

The lady I spoke to on the phone was also the one I met when I went in to have it changed and she was very courteous. Also turned out she loved bikes as well ... spent about two minutes talking about the offence code and about twenty on bikes Laughing

I've got a 'CU60', which doesn't exist (should be a CU30) on my licence.
Haven't bothered to look into it as it seems not much would be done.

I also have an sp60 on my licence.
Whats the difference, there both the same amount of points and fine, and have little if any effect on you're insurance premiums.

What was the point in having it changed to sp30?

(genuinely curious)

According to the article I read it could affect possibly raise your insurance ... I didn't want to take the chance.

Here's the story in the Telegraph, followed by the update to say the code was invalidated Thumbs Up

when I was stopped for speeding and then issued my ticket the officershad written the wrong date on the slip and when I went into the police station to queery this they took it off me and wrotedown the officers details on the slip and threw the ticket in the bin and told me nothing would happen now due to someone lack off ability to write everything down correctly.

I'm not sure how it would be affected by the wrong offence code but maybe would have been worth a try to speak to a solicitor first?

You can just imagine Gary Glitter in court saying he should be let of because the court says she was 13 1/2 years old when actually she was 12 3/4 years old.
