Does anyone wear motorcycle glasses similar to these?
I'm after something to enhance my vision at night time and take away the glare from car headlights. My mate told me about motorcycle glasses - I'd never heard of them and I'm wondering if they really work? Worth the money?
I realise I could just get an amber tint pinlock insert for my arai lid, but the glasses would be easier. Before ppl say don't wear glasses when riding - these have shatter proof lenses and have been tested etc.

I think they wear ordinary prescription glasses
As an alternative to a tinted Pinlock/Fogcity insert I'd say it looks like they'd do the job. Don't have any experience with them though but I'm interested to see other people's feed back. ____________________ This is my motorcycle. There are many others like it, but this one is mine.

FWIW - floppy willy, I want.
I have some reebok night glasses as I have cack night vision. They do work in terms of seeing white lines in road etc, when there is no street lighting, but I cant say it reduced headlight glare TBH ____________________ My mum smells your fingers |

How do you rate them?
Are they specific motorbike ones? Motorbike ones seem to have foam on the frames and removable arms etc. ____________________ Summer: '00 Honda CB600F Hornet

Certain grades of amber tint enhance contrast and can make riding in fog easier.
But there is a flip side to these lenses, as they cut the light level down that is reaching you eye, so can on a darkened road make things worse.
As to glare non cut that out.
Don't look at the light is the answer to that one. ____________________ Just because my bike was A DIVVY, does not mean i am...... |

dunno about fog but if you wear specs with a presrciption then ask your local optician about scotchguard.
it's a top of the range lens that is anti static and repels dust, is mist resistent, water repellent and has the added properties of allowing more light through because it is anti glare and reflection.
i work in an opticians and my boss wears that. you will see that a lot of news reporters or television people have it so that we don't see any reflections on them.
cost is about 85 quid and then the frame is whatever you choose. a few of our biker paitients have scothcguard too with a flexon frame (quality flexible frame brand) ____________________ Hit the G spot. |

Mmm...
30 yeas in optics making the things. Scotchguard is only a coating, that is applied with a MAR.
I see its on Essilor products. Over priced French stuff.
£85 for a lens is a total rip off.... I bet that price is just on the stock range of Single Vision as well Cost to the optician, bet these are under £10.....
Any MAR coat is mist and water repellent by its very nature. |
in terms of lenses essilor is the best company overall to any other. is it overpriced? well i work in hackney which is one of the worse most deprived boroughs in england, and yet these people who really do feel the credit crunch pay the 85 quid because it is very good. ofcourse their are even nhs people who pay 45 for it also.
mar is mist and water repellent in it's nature apart from the fact that you get dust, figner prints and grease clinging onto it which adversely affects it and then makes it perform worse. put your finger on it and see your figner print clear as anything. imagine a clog up of grease and oil etc and then the anti mist properties do not work. infact i would recommend a simple plastic lens compared to a mar always.
every motorcyclist we have had on the scothguard has rated it highly. we all know the problem with having mist on our visors, and i can only imagine the trouble with specs. from hot to cold environments the scothguard lens (coating) is the best thing out there. it is absolutely great for glare at night too.
the cost of the lenses are about 10 quid to us. because the scotchguard lenses get delivered extremely fast we offer a better collection time. opticians make profits from lenses since frames are expensive and the profits only come once you sell the majority of the frames.
okay yeah so 15 quid for lenses. you have to take into account that:
20k wages per year for a technician.
cost of electricity and water for the glazing machine quarterly
25k for the glazing machine itself
4k yearly costs in maintenance and servicing
wages for salesman to dispense
wages for someone to clean it up, call the patient and then deal with the collection.
because it is a quality product the specs get made up faster as part of the service too.
the fact that it is very water repellent means the machine has to be set on a slower mode because it is very slippery, delays time to get the lenses cut to about 9 minutes. considering a glazer has only 8 hours day the price reflects on the hassle i would say.
it comes with 2 years warranty on not peeling off. if it does then essilor replaces it free of charge.
250 quid a day for a locum.
cost of leases, bills etc. you need to make a profit somewhere.
85 quid. i would pay for it ____________________ Hit the G spot. |

i am not sure if you have been in optics for 30 years or not but i would suggest you actually see the feedback from customers.
essilor is a top company and this is not just my opinion but also our patients. zeiss is the best in my eyes and and then perhaps hoya, norville and essilor are about the same. essilor is the best value out of those 4. they dispatch quickly and i think they send out about 10k jobs a day.
there are cheaper companies out there such as signet armolite, wlc and shamir uk but they are slow to dispatch and the quality is crap.
for example we have sold many essilor lenses to paitents for years i.e comfort and no problem. we get them to try other lenses by other companies because they are cheaper to us and then the patient and they have problems.
in terms of hard coat essilor uses a vacuum hard coat method and it lasts donkey years. companies like signet armolite use the dip and dry method that we have at our own branch. it does not last at all
privately we charge 19 quid for 30 mins time. this is done once every 2 years for an adult.
the nhs does not fund every single patient. you need to fit the criteria of under 16. full time study aged 16-18.
on income support, pension credit, job seekers allowance or working family tax's credit with the nhs exemption card.
diabetic or a glaucoma sufferer. 40 and have a brother sister, parent that has glaucoma.
so we only make about 300 odd quid a day from sight tests which just about covers a locums wages for the day. that is if we have a full clinic... it is half an hour clinic because we are an independent and don't shove patients down the opticians throat where they rush and give a shit quality in and out job. we have a machine made by zeiss that checks fthe field of vision and that costs 10k and you need a service contract too which costs a bomb. there are plenty of costs that you just don't see from the outside. i am sure it is the same for other shops too. considering we need people to be happy and return to us rather than go to crap places like speccies who obviously gain by having the advantages of economies of scale, recognition, location, name brand and cheap deals. ps i would liek to also meniton that they actually bought the rights to the name pentax since that company actually went bust. very clever tool to say pentax lenses etc but they actually own the rights now lol.
as for frames. the cheap nhs frames are just over 1 pound for a company like us. we give them for free... and only can claim for the lenses. so every nhs frame is a loss... and because they have no springs and are so shit quality we replace them free of charge when they break because they don't last...
as for designers. they get charges millions to have contracts from gucci etc and come in at about 50 quid inc vat and delivery. so we have to sell about 50% before any profit is made. that can take over a year and then the next season is out... obviously we can't leave a rack half empty so need to rebuy more... or they don;'t sell at all when it looks empty.
your friend is selling varifocals from essilor for 85 quid. we are selling essilor liberty for 90 quid... same price...
how much is a stock prescription lens? uncoated? 30-40 maybe 55 quid at vision express. we do it for 30. quite cheap
mar coated lens? we are doing for 50 but i have seen the bigger multiples do it for 60
scotchguard at 85 quid with 2 years warranty on the coating is not that expensive. plus we gurantee they get their jobs done sooner than others. i mean 85 quid for lenses that you will be wearing everyday for 2 years most likely and if not longer is cheap. works out to 11p a day... something that helps you to see better than any other lens imo.
remember also that if their sight test bi annually shows there is not enough change then they can keep the lenses.
as for him and his glazing machine. i bet that it is so uneffiecient that he is using a focimetre to measure up the lenses, dot it up and then it takes a long time to make it up. so all in all he is taking a lot longer to do it. 20k is a normal average wage for someone who glazes lenses. if your optician friend is doing tests and glazing himself then it must be so quiet that he doesn't get any fully booked day at all. no wonder he has a 15 year old machine.
anyway go to your local optician. put your finger on an mar lens and then do it on a scothguard. you will see that difference that one has finger pritns on it and also it gets dirty a lot more easier with the dust that it attracts. splash water on it and see that none stays on it. essilor have given us a sample to show that it doesn't keep water on it, is anti static and you can do the finger print test. we let every patient do it if they want. sometimes you get people with very oily fingers but then cleaning it is easier too which we show compared to a mar lens.
i'm not even a salesman but i do sometimes. i do cut lenses and from my own tests and experience scothguard coated lenses are top notch. oh and as i can glaze but also do the accounts, i always call the companies up and ask for cheaper prices or what deals they have. the costs of utilities, machinery, frames, lenses, contact lenses, salaries mean the profits are about 20-40k maximum per annum after we get done by tax. we are only a small company however. so no we aren't in poverty but we are also not making huge profits.
uncoated is like a cheap Chinese bike 125
mar is like a suzuki gs 500
scotchguard is like a ducati in performance and a honda in build quality ____________________ Hit the G spot. |
