car fuel pump question

Just bought my son a 96 astra and there is a pronounced rattling/vibrating coming from the fuel tank area which im guessing is the fuel pump.

There doesn't seem to be any detrimental effect to the drive of the car and it is more pronounced when starting or turning off the engine.

My question is i suppose is it likely to just pack in suddenly or will i notice its going over a period of time?

Any help appreciated.

Hi

To be honest likely to fail. Fair chance that any drop in fuel pressure resulting in a leaner mixture would be compensated for by the feedback from the lambda probe for quite a while. At some point it will either decide there is a fault and flag it up, or the pump will just fail.

This assumes it is a petrol car. And if so the pump is probably pretty cheap.

Make sure its the fuel pump first before wasting money on one. Easy thing to do as you will be able to feel it knocking if you touch it while it's making the noise.
