Just pondering to myself.

Theoretically, if your tax expired months ago, and the person in question has only just realised, because he didnt recieve a reminder from DVLA or a fine for not doing SORN..

Where do you stand.

Given that you are guilty until proven innocent, as soon as you tax said vehicle, they will just slap you with a massive fine surely?

Anyone been in a similar situation?
How do you proceed?

Very unfair, what happened to being allowed to make an honest mistake?

Government pays out billions to those who make dishonest mistakes.

Maybe thats the way to go with bike tax.

i should get a diary or calender or make it a habit of checking monthly when your tax is due... Not really worth the risk of some ANPR camera spotting you then potencially having your bike crushed..

Did that for my bike, 6 months before I realised it had no tax, so alas, taxed it and heard nothing since.

How about if you went down to your local DVLA regional office, explained the situation and offered to pay for the tax from when it ran until whenever it is theoretically due again? Would this work and stop you from getting a fine?

Ideal solution though it requires two things you won't find at a DVLA regional office.

1) Staff that aren't monkeys.
2) Common sense.

Hi

They are under no obligation to remind you (might reduce their profits).

They can and will likely fine you.

All for an utterly pointless system.

All the best

Crazy idea, but isn't it strange that you never received a reply from when you sent them the SORN notice? Wink

I must have totally ignored at least half a dozen SORN fines now.

It has yet to be taken further than a debt collection agency pestering me on the phone.

Last time they called I told them categorically that as far as I was concerned I owed the DVLA nothing. When she tried to tell me different I told her that if that was the case she'd better either take me to court or stop harassing me or I'd report her to trading standards.

I have heard nothing since. That was over a month ago.

Just to be clear, I totally ignored them. I didn't write them a letter, I didn't fill in the form saying who was in charge of the vehicle at the time of the alleged offence, I didn't try to appeal to their better nature or challenge what they were doing on a point of law. Total absence of communication from my end. The only time I have discussed the matter is when they farmed out the "debt" to a collection agency who called me. I have told them every time they called that as far as I am concerned I owe the DVLA nothing.

No, because I don't watch telly. I get some fun letters about my absence of a TV licence though.

The latest one says they are sending someone round to my house again to take a statement under caution and that I could be liable for a fine of over £2,000 if I'm found to be watching TV without a licence.

Frankly, it's a wonder I'm not shitting a brick. I need to come up with a suitably witty sketch to perform for them this time as I'm stood at the doorway not letting them in. I can't do the Frenchmen sketch out of the Holy Grail again. "It's ok, we already got one. It's very nice." "I told them we already got one" SLAM!
