A BBC presenter sacked for racism because she didn't want an asian taxi driver to pick up her daughter Shocked

Thinking if she didn't want a male driver/complete stranger to pick up a 14 year girl would she have been sacked for sexism?

BBC wrote:
...According to The Sun newspaper, Miss Mason allegedly told a Bristol taxi firm "not to send an Asian driver to pick up her daughter".

The Sun said Miss Mason, 40, told a cab operator: "A guy with a turban on is going to freak her out."

When her request was refused, she is alleged to have said: "You've managed it before."

The taxi worker was said to be outraged and recorded the conversation, passing a copy to The Sun.

Miss Mason is reported to have called the taxi firm off-air as she played a song on her afternoon show. ...

Now, given that the taxi worker didn't know if the girl had possibly been traumatised in the past by a turban wearing individual (I speculate but you get the idea) IMO this was a perfectly reasonable request. If the firm felt unable to comply then should have just said so, passing on a recording was out of order.

Full report if you click here.

If it wasn't a BBC presenter, it wouldn't have made the "news" ( I used that term very loosely). The BBC would have the tabloids hounding them if they hadn't dismissed her.

Here's the Sun article :-

I disagree, I don't think it was a reasonable request and she shouldn't have done this at all as it points towards racism, especially as she is in the public eye too! However I'm not saying she intended to be racist be doing this...

If the 14hr old girl has issues with Asian taxi drivers or been traumatised having 'been near' them previously then it is the responsibility of her mother to find an alternate means of transport that solves this and not expect other people to cater for her daughter, maybe get a friend to help out or something.

I think its a legitimate request, had she rang up and said "don't send a (derogatory term) driver" etc etc then yes that would be wrong. I can't see the problem here other than just another reason to give the bbc a bad name.

So there was nothing wrong with the request, they'd granted it before and they granted it again.

I agree with most of the posters here. If you want to state what type of person you'd like to pick up your 14 year old child, so be it. She wasn't rude or offensive so they had no grounds to be offended really.

Why were they recording the call though? I would bet money that they never told her they were recording the call....

Just goes to underline my deep mistrust of taxi drivers. Middle Finger

Wow i posted in here and my karma went from white to red. Thumbs Up
Anyway i totally agree it's a service you pay for so you should be able to specify and she wasn't derogatory in anyway. My mam is a taxi driver and she agrees because people ask all the time for certain drivers and a lot of women ask for a female driver aswell and that isn't seen as sexist.

Why?
The taxi firm is there to provide a service that they get paid for. As proved by the manager
The Sun wrote:
...a manager accepted her booking...
If a taxi firm isn't willing to cater for the requirements of their potential customers then how do they stay in business (or why are they in business in the first place)?

The issue appears to be that of the person taking the telephone call
The Sun wrote:
...Operator: “We would class that as being racist. We can’t penalise the Asian drivers and just send an English one.”....

It is the operator who appears to be forcing her views/beliefs on the mother.

Is that right?, given that here on Remembrance Day we're reflecting on those who have given their lives so that you and me could be free to have different opinions and not have any forced on us.

seems to me that to much is put down to racism these days, my 15yr old has just been in trouble at school for saying Jambo (hello or good morning in african, cant remember which), to a teacher, who he didnt know, turns out the teacher is french and took it as highly offensive and racist.
I have now got to go and grovel to this .....teacher so as it won't go on his school record!

How does it point towards racism?

Surely a Caucasian man can be Sikh and wear a turban.

The fact she said not to send an Asian was wrong but the thing about the turban is perfectly feasible in my opinion.

She even explained why she didn't want a man wearing a turban to.

Whether you think she should be allowed to specify the type of taxi driver or not, saying she didnt want an asian driver is racist.

Customers may frequently make preferences of this type, and probably a lot of the time the customer is always right so people just do what the customer asks.

However asking for a non-asian taxi driver is likely to cause problems, as so many are asian, and if you are a presenter for the BBC, you really are leaving yourself wide open for attack.

Discrimination on grounds of race is only allowed in the other direction. Where it is seen as 'positive'.

well if the driver can't do his job because of his race then so be it, but the fact is, i am sure he could have done it. i mean the presenter should try finding a cab in new york. from the film/source 'men in black' it looks like they are all asian

Is the OP seriously outraged that you can't say "don't send an Asian taxi driver" anymore?!

Of course you can't say that, because it's racist!

The word racist is used at every opportunity these days, this wasn't racist, nowhere even near being racist. This whole country is so wrapped up in political correctness and people acting how they think they're 'supposed' to act. Fuck that, the people who don't speak up are the ones who should be suffering.

well if he's not good enough to drive her child then perhaps he and other asians should not pay for their tv license which helps pay he wages or should i say previous salary.

This seems to fit the bill to me... The woman thought a non-asian driver would be superior (no, I don't just mean at driving) to an asian one.

If the woman had said dont send me one of them spear throwing drivers then thats racist.

What if she had said dont send me a white taxi driver or do you have any women taxi drivers as i dont want a male driver, is that still racist or sexist?

Of course saying "don't send a white taxi driver" is racist, yes!

If there was a sign on the door of a pub saying "no asians" - you wouldn't class that as racist then?

Eh, no you don't Evil or Very Mad

Jambo, is a Swahili word meaning "hello", and usuing a recognised language cannot be decreed as being racist or abusive.

I learned Swahili at school for a trip to Kenya, if it makes me a racist I shall sue Wink

Anyway, Asanta Sana (Thankyou Wink )

Bet it wouldnt have made the papers though.

A pub is different, your not sharing an intimate enclosed space with a complete stranger there are you so your choice of 'stranger' is more significant.

If i was the driver and someone said to me no i dont want you i want an asian driver i wouldnt bat an eyelid, id just jog on to my next fare.

It was positive, she asked for an English driver. Possibly a minority amongst taxi drivers?

And your proof of this?

Don't give a shit what anyone says, the word racism should only be mentioned if a personal insult has been used, or obvious discrimination is demonstrated. This was not discrimination, she did not specify her reasons for this request. Correct me if i'm wrong, but can't a woman choose the sex of their midwife for when they give birth? Is this sexist?

I didnt see any suggestion that she thought a white driver would be superior? she seemed to have asked for a non asian non turban wearing driver and if possible a woman.

Am I the only one that though maybe the girl had been attacked my a turban wearing asian man at some point? if that was the case then surely its not that unreasonable a request?

Granted it was a really stupid thing for someone in the public eye to say but I can see reasons why this may not have been race motivated.

She actually said:

"An Englishman would be great but a woman would be better."

and then she says:

"If it was me I wouldn't care if it had 2 heads, but because it's my 14 year old little girl we're talking about..."

Hardly racist.

Public eye my arse. Nobody outside of the Bristol area has probably ever heard of the woman, this is just a bit of self-flagellation by the Beeb.
