In that as Damog says I'm going to take it in the ass for another 4-6 months at my current work place then jack the job in the moment I get qualified and take 3-4 months off.

Using my weapon of choice a super tenere I'm looking at tommorow night (a 1989 G reg one!) with max of 6-8 hours in the seat how far can I get in 3-4 months?.

I'm currently mulling

A trip round the med , but not going via Morroco going via Alacante to Oran , going to Egypt , but then I'm a tad stuck in that how do you cross Iraq to get into Iran and up via the Russsian satellite states? , since I ride quickly and quite a bit of North Africa is sandy and desolate, and thus will be covered very quickly...

Or because north Africa is sandy and desolate its best to skip it and just head into Russia via Germany and go round the Black and Caspian sea in a big lap?...

Any ideas?

Thanks

Can't think of anything much worse than being stuck in Africa at 35-50 degrees C for weeks with probably few places to shower, difficult to sleep, no chance of just stopping somewhere for a cold drink. Depends if you're really after total middle of nowhere or reasonable civilisation, surely a breakdown in the middle of Africa is gonna be a gigantic hassle when it comes to fixing the bike or getting spares.

I reckon you can achieve 18,000 miles max but safe bet is to work on 12,000 and enjoy the secenery.

This is based on an average of 200 miles a day for 90 days Wink

yes but when I ask how far can I go I mean where to? , Iran via Africa and back? , on European roads I can manage 3-400 miles a day easy, but once out of western Europe I'm not so sure roads may become tracks and or non existant...

Could you get your bike shipped somewhere and ride back, rather then doing a loop or traveling back through the same countries. It might give you the chance to reach more exotic location then you'd get to visit if you've got to ride both ways.

true the problem is out there I don't know any decent shipping companies, I know a shipping company who will ship to anywhere in Europe for £115 , and any port in China or Russia / and Thailand for £550.

could be an idea... though

Well I've been told repeatedly that it's completely impossible to do a southern tour of the Mediterranean on a bike, so you may want to look into that.

Crossing Iraq is unnecessary though as you can just pop into Turkey and then into Iran.

www.Horizonsunlimited.com is the site you need really.

As far as 'how far you can get' goes, you could get to India at a fairly leisurely pace (I recommend spending as little time in Europe as possible to avoid the outrageous cost of.. well.. just about everything) and then just fly the bike back (not as expensive as you think, ball park of about twice a passenger fare).

Hope that helps!

It's meant to be almost impossible to get into Iran with a Carnet de Passage. Same for probably any African countries you want to go to. I'm gonna have a go at Iran without one next year though, all being well.

India's meant to be a major headache with paperwork and administration.

I did 18,500 in just under 90 days on my old 1970s cb550, so there shouldn't be any limit to where you can distance wise.

How about flying out to the Americas, buying a second hand bike there, and exploring central/south america? A bit different to Africa or Russia which are what all european bike travellers are doing.
