I am sorry for asking a stupid question, but I am not a real motor head. I was given a pocket bike from a friend, but it never ran right, so I decided to buy a newer one. I bought a pocket bike off of ebay that needed a couple of part that I took off the old bike. I replaced the carb and put a metal pull start on. The bike started well the first time, but once I stopped the bike and tried to start the bike again it was difficult to pull the pull start cord. I can get the bike started, but it hurts my hand just to pull the pull start. the pull start is not pulling smoothly that my 14 y/o son isn't going to be able to start the bike on his own. What have I done wrong. Someone please help.

I have a chainsaw is like this when the engine is cold.
Probably not much you can do, was the pull handle metal or rubber originally?
Rubber might be easier on the hand I think.

Two stroke? Did you use any two stroke oil?
Four stroke? Did you fill with oil?

Agreed.

Other than that, it sounds like it could be the compression release not working properly if it has one (this holds the valves open to make it easier to turn over).

Also there is a knack to pullstarting engines. The correct way to do it is to pull gently until you feel resistance, allow it to pop back in and then give it a firm tug.
