PostPosted: 13:12 - 18 Nov 2008    Post subject: Car window/demister question Reply with quote

So after buying my Focus estate in June'ish time and having endless problems since, I've now found out the rear window demister doesn't work! Evil or Very Mad I've checked the fuses etc and all is fine however looking at the electrical connections on either side of the window, they have a darkened patch around both of them making it look like it's burned out somehow.

Any ideas what I can do or will I pretty much have to replace the whole window?
I've been round Ebay/the local scrap yards and none have any Focus estate rear windows - s'pose I could get it 'chipped' and claim on insurance then I'll only have to pay the excess!! Twisted Evil

Hi

You can get a conductive paint to repair the tracks of the heated window. Use a multimeter to find the exact spot that is damaged and then use the paint to repair it.

That said I have only used it on individual lines on a window. Not on the main connection areas.

All the best

Keith

You know how come we don't have double layer visors? , say safety glass the kind with wires in it that doesn't break it spider webs instead..

and an inner plastic visor to prevent glass in yer eye...

Such that we could have de-misting visors powered by a socket into the bike....

your going to say cost aren't you , as curved glass is £££££.

Hi

Suspect it is cost. No need for glass I would think, but 2 layer plastic would likely be a fair bit more expensive, and the market is probably not large enough (ie, people who are rich enough to pay that much extra but who also ride in weather that would justify it). Not sure if you would have problems avoiding optical distortion issues with a fairly thick "double glazed" visor.

The double glazing effect alone would probably solve most of the misting issues even without a heater element.

All the best

Keith

That's a cracking idea for the visors!! Wink

Kickstart, it's the whole window that doesn't work and the connections on the window seem fine... I haven't used that paint stuff before though, might be worth a try! Thumbs Up

2 layer plastic is what pinlock is, its lust that the inner layer is very thin

I think snowmobile helmets are thick double glazed, and I think stinkwheel bought one a while back.

Hi

Forgot about Stinkwheels visor. Not sure whether they are sufficiently impact resistant

Pinlock is just a cheap bodge. Works OK, but like double glazing your house using cling film.

All the best

Keith

Hi

Depends what you count as works.

Rubber waterproof suits worked but had down sides. Same with Pinlock systems (ie, need to move them depending on riding position, can be damaged, expensive add on).

Proper hollow visor should be possible without the down sides and without looking like a bodge job.

All the best

Keith

I know, that's why I put a smilie on the end to indicate amusement that this has happened - I don't mind really and find it quite funny! Rolling Eyes

dont try and chip any window but the front one. it is tempered glass and will shatter.

Bob Heath visors did such a thing back in the 70's. Found my old one in the loft last year. Was going to fit it to my helmet, but the curve is all wrong and it won't fit.
Was a great idea. Toughned glass on the outside, nice and scratch risistant and plastic inside.... Still steamed up though.
To stop steaming you need a air gap, to stop the transmission of heat/cold.

Mine fogged up the other night had to ride on a dual carridgeway with the visor up. Bit too cold for my liking. Neutral

As said a few posts above check the relay, if not the relay check the switch.

Okay, just a quick update to this. I checked the fuse, switch and relay. Swapped the relay for another identical one and both work fine, fuse swapped tested and works fine too and when the switch is pressed the light on it comes on and the relay clicks.

I've also tested the rear window with my multimeter for continuity and that appears fine however when the demister is switched on there is no voltage coming to the connectors on the window - leading me to believe it must be the wiring that is broken somewhere...

Anyone wanna do a car swap!? Rolling Eyes Laughing

Solution = a cloth and 5 seconds of your time. Open your back door, wipe the window, close the back door. Fixed Cool

Most likely place for the break is where the wiring is moved. Hence check the wiring in the flexi rubber protective bit from the car to the tail gate.

Also check seperatly that you have and earth from the heater elements and for power. Break could be on either circuit.

All the best

Keith

...Get in the car, 2 min's down the road and it's all misted up again!!

Not to mention when you wanna use it to de-ice the outside of the window too. Wink
