Every set I have ever come across have been stuck solid or utter pants.

Thought id got mine sorted but in the space of 50 miles they have gone from being awesome to spongier than a mr kipling cake.

WTF can I do to them to sort them, new seals, fluid and pads and they are still wank. Kawasakis seem to be renowned for this.

They are complete pants and offer no confidence about even being able to stop when the lever is pulled tight.

Braided lines help.
They are definitely soggier than the rather good Yamaha blue-spots; however I've never found ones in decent nick to be lacking in power.

Ive got goodridge braided on, the calipers were brand spanking new 8 months ago and are fed by a brembo 19x20 master cylinder.

i had this exact same problem on my srad 750 mate and the simple answer was to buy 4pot calipers as they work a shit load better.

i went through all the motions like you with a new M/C braided lines, pads, fluid etc and all did sweet FA.

visited PDQ race developments and they said straight away the old tokico 6 pots have always been shite and they always change them too 4 pots.
bandit 12 and srad6 4 pots should fit all tokico 6pots and the bonus is I put my calipers on ebay for £80 and they sold within an hour. seem to be popular within the streetfighter crowd

In a word yes,
But keep on top of them, make sure all the pistons work and you have braided lines and pads and they should be pretty good.

I did all the above before the Cartegena trackday on the TLR.

Ill go against the grain here, The original tokicos on my ZX6 were terrible, replaced with a new set, braided hoses etc the front is spot on now.

A mate has a J1 ZX6 with original tokico fronts and suprisingly they feel great too...

They might not be as precise as good 4-pots but hauling down from silly speeds they are good, no bother with stoppies either. Thumbs Up

If you had sold me that brembo master cylinder they would be earth stopping Smile

Funny thing is I have owned two bikes back to back with those callipers and never had them seize. Almost 4 years between both bikes, ridden all year around too, I cant say I paid a huge amount of attention to the brakes either, both bikes had standard hoses too. Must had been lucky.

They felt good on my ZX9R C1, but then again i was coming from an FZR1000 Genesis. My next set were a on a Busa, bloody AWFUL! The bike i had after the Busa, a VN1500 cruiser had more feel and bite from a single disc and +130KG. My mate didn t do a mile on his Busa till he'd replaced the tokicos with a pair of six pot nissins made to fit.

Busa ones do seem to be particularly bad for some reason; those I had on a ZX6 and ZX9 weren't nearly as bad.

The pair that have been on the front of my ZRX for the past 10 years will smoke the front tire by moving the lever about 1/2in with 2 fingers.... HH pads, Galfer lines.

They've been overhauled once in 83,000 miles..

I had an issue with forks being mis-aligned which led to the calipers acting like they were seized. In the time before i realised the forks were fudged the calipers were cleaned to new with new seals. Now ive sorted the alignment they are bloody good. With a different master cyclinder and well bled they are better than most brakes of the same price bracket.

Are the 'Busa ones always gold? Reason I ask is that I have two ZX7Rs, one has black Tokicos and ones has the gold ones.

I was speaking to Stu at Bikedevils (He's the main guy for 7R parts) and he told me that the gold ones are from 'Busas and are slightly better than the ones fitted to the 7Rs as they had some different material coating the pistons.

I find the brakes on both my 7rs disappointing to say the least, but the gold ones are slightly better on my bikes.

The bike I have that has the black calipers didn't have braided hoses, so I fitted a set hoping for an improvement, but they're still just as bad.

Mine were Gold on my Busa, i've just checked the pics. I always thought that they had been pained that colour though. They were still woeful brakes for a 200 mph bike. The 6 pot Nissns my mate put on his Busa were very good in comparison. Mind you they were nearly £400 and he got a good deal at the time coz i bought my Busa from the same guy at the same time.

I had no problem with my ZX6R J1's brakes, and they felt powerful and progressive. They do take more lever effort with the std master cylinder to stop, than some set up's, but the brakes were very good id say. I cleaned them a couple of times, just using a toothbrush and brake cleaner, but i used std kawasaki pads, and just new fluid every 2years.

I suspect that they are never quite as good as the Yamaha monoblock calipers, and not as good as any of the Radial set up's now used. But they are not shite on a 170kg bike, unless maybe you have come from a more current sportsbike?

TBH most bikes with old style 4 or 6pot caliper's when in good condition, and uprated with decent pads and lines+fluid, i cannot see that they would be massively worse than todays Radial Monobloc calipers at stopping a similar weight bike? I wait to be corrected though, as i have never ridden a bike with radial brake calipers fitted. And even if they are night and day better, then i still think it's not an issue most of the time on the road. Maybe track riding would show up a big advantage maybe?

Apart from being a pain to service and an even bigger pain to bleed, all the Tokico 6 pots I've ridden have been fine. Not asa good as the monoblock stuff but good enough to lock the front.

It's worth checking that the brakes are fully bled though, the design of the caliper leaves lots of nooks and crannies for air bubbles to hide.

Cheers

ZRX1100's have gray calipers, ZRX1200's have the gold ones, only difference is the colour.... altho *some* have 2 different sized pistons (4 normal, 2 smaller)
