in a 70 zone.

Pootling down th M4 I overtook a lorry, infront of the lorry was a silver car travelling at 60ish MPH. I moved into the slow lane and the silver car decided to drive right up my arse.

For 2 miles in the dark he was so close his lights were blinding me in my mirrors, as I was about to turn off for the M32 when the car behind started flashing blue lights. Arse. Pig Mobile.

So I pull over and the orroficer asks me to get off my bike and stand in the verge while he talks to me.

Officer prick:- "do you know why I have stopped you?"
Me:- "No officer"
Officer:- Can you tell me what speed you were doing?
Me:- "no officer I was concentrating on the road ahead, though you were following we so close your lights were distracting me.
Officer:- Well for the past 2 miles I have followed you at 74mph.

Now this he didnt seem to like, for 20 minutes we stood at the side of the road while he did a vehicle check, breathalized me and went over my bike with a fine toothed comb. The prat even measured, yes measured my completely legal numberplate.
Eventually after a lecture on "how bikes are evil" he let me go with a producer.

What an absolute cock. My bike is 100% legal and (for once) I was driving within the law. No wonder these jumped up tits get themselves a bad name. Rah

Have you got his number?
Make an official complaint about his attitude, etc.

Not saying it'll do much, but we can't begin to reasonably moan if we don't actually make an effort to let the proper people know when they're doing bad.

If he was up your arse, why didn't you drop your speed to 40, then blast off up to 70 again?

you should have complained about him tail gating you , or not rise to the challenge, in times gone by I'd have gunned it , now I slow right down .....

If it smells fishy slow down and shoulder check and look carefully , if they look like cops (hard to tell) you can put your hand up in a STOP sort of gesture and many know the game is up....

But hey you don't have any rights....

Yeah his badge number and plate were duly taken. Believe me a complaint is gonna be made to the police farce.

If I hade been speeding/no tax/ RIDING A RINGER yeah I could understand being pulled, but completely at random for a none offence takes the piss. Whilest he followed me there must have been a dozen or more cars that sped past us including at least 1 with rear lights out.

Gah im seething.

And why do we even need producers anymore? They have my insurance an MOT on their database, he could see it was taxed and me on my license.

Spite....

Anyway its nearly the end of the month , police have to make their arrest/crime solving scores up to the minimum required levels and traffic is an easy target.

Because he had nothing else to do you with, if he can waste another hour or so (riding to and from the police station, making you go out your way) it makes him feel like the winner.

Down to discretion of the officer they are only guidelines, can be fined for 70.1mph if they wanted. Bear in mind 74mph true will probably read 76mph ish on speedo.

He was probably upset that I'd overtaken him on the M5 at 80mph through the Almondsbury interchange this morning. But, he was stuck in the traffic queue and wasn't in a position to 'ave me Shifty

So he risked your life by tailgating then moaned at you for doing 74mph...

What a twat. The fact he went over your bike with a fine toothcomb means he was clutching at straws trying to find something else to hit you with.

File the complaint. 'Tis worth it. Thumbs Up

Make a formal complaint and make sure they know you aren't just going to let it go, they will be forced to take it seriously, if they don't seem to take it seriously then just report them and the original complaint to the Police Complaints Authority.

I'd like to seem him claim in court that the VASCAR system (a speed distance time computer based on manual button pressings at marker points) is accurate to that extent. I can't see a court willing to convict for 4mph over, unless of course you're stupid enough to admit to it Smile

Plod having a bad day, they like to spread the joy!

I once got pulled on my old Mito, many years ago, by a plod who didn't believe it was a 125, as I had L plates at the time. It was one of the first Evolution Mitos in the country but he would not believe it. Ended up calling a bike copper to come and verify it.

Once he'd been proved wrong, he turned into a total c**t to hide his embarrasment. Producer, breathalysed, checked everything with a fine tooth comb. Git.

Sometimes the plod are their own worst enemy.

Cheers

Grim

Ok, to state once again...
ACPO (Association of Chief Police Officers) guidelines states that an allowance of 10% + 2mph is given.

Therefore
70mph = 70+10%+1mph = 78mph = no action
70mph = 70+10%+2mph = 79mph = fine and points.

Apply to all other limits including national.

Hope that's clear.
The get out clause is of course that they're only guidelines. However, the theory is you can't have one using the guidelines and another ignoring them.

Certainly stopping you for 74mph is harsh and worthy of a letter of complaint given your observation of his driving. Don't make it sound like sour grapes though, you're helping them to improve Wink Shocked .
FWIW I'd also send something into the local police authority. The elected officials on there might like to know how their (i.e. our) money is being used.

Thumbs Up

See, I reckon you might have failed the attitude test when he pulled you over. They all have their own version of this 'test' and simply put, if you come across as a bit of a twat, they'll take their sweet time doing what they're legally allowed to do....

I'm not saying you were being a twat, I'm saying his perception of your attitude may have influenced his decision to get a bit more interested.

But, 74mph is 4mph over the speed limit, innit?

I think you're right to feel a little peeved, especially with him tailgating you, but look at it this way, you've not got points for it.

I'm under the increasing impression that coppers think all bikes are toys though, and anyone riding them is 'player 1' and hence they can be examined at length without causing a legitimate delay to said player's business.

Call the Police immediately and tell them about a dangerous driver who was tailgaiting (assuming you have his numberplate). Tell them you feel this driver is a danger and a menace to other road users and that he endangered your life causing great stress.

Do not tell them he is a Police officer. If youre lucky they may not realise he is until they visit (assuming they do). Not likely they wont know but good to fuck them about.

I agree completely with you Stuntman, however from what the OP has said the Police officer had no legitimate reason to pull him over, bar the fact he has the 'power' to. Misuse/abuse of power is also a possible disciplinary offence within the police, which is what this sounds to be.

I was riding along an A road single carraigeway recently, and had a police unmarked vehile following me! My friend got pulled over by said vehicle so I knew what to expect. I sat at the speed limit, and 1 mile on recieved some flashing blues in my mirror and pulled over (other side of road free of traffic at the time) As I stop, the police car waits for now passing traffic to go by, overtakes me and rejoins a queue of traffic we were already in.
That pissed me off as he didnt have anywhere to go afterwards and I followed him all the way back to the station.

I spoke to a guy at work the next day who told me about a similar thing happening to him. He visited the police station and when he mentioned how he would be making a complaint about a vehicle from there police force, he was advised 'might be better if you think about the hassle that might cause you'.

Now, I would have been able to walk into the police station and make an anonymous complaint, but that would do nothingbut wind people up I am sure.

Be an unusually accurate speedo to be that close. I would not be surprised if it was showing over 80mph.

All the best

It was reading somewhere between 65 and 75 mph as the needle bounces a wee bit.

Complaint filed at lunchtime today. Will see how far it goes.

Don't tell them that as it's your responsibility to make sure it is working ok and if you tell them the speedo is worn out they will just say pay the fine and fix your speedo.

I'd have slowed right down if he was tailgating me...can't stand people that tailgate, there really is no need to put mine or their own lives at risk for the sake of a few feet of road.

Report the cunt for tailgating.
